Hi folk.

Does anybody have a complete list of items I need for a engine rebuild excluding head and gearbox.

Thanks.

It all depends on what you need to buy after measuring and machining if needed,

but just gaskets and bearings. But when in bits changing the oil pump is a good idea.

Don’t buy anything till you have stripped it down and you inspected the components, only after measuring up will you be able to decide what parts and machining will be needed to make the best out of your engine.

It normally takes me quite a few separate orders to get all the parts I need. I always forget something and have to order it, or lose or damage something on assembly.

As AC said, make a list during disassembly and measure things like thrust washers and end floats.

Is there a list of items I should be measuring please? I have digital callipers and normal feeler gauges, is this sufficient?

Its done 86k so thinking everything will need something. With this kind of mileage will the rockers and push rods be out of spec?

Nope. You need a whole lot more measuring tools that are not cheap.

Which it why you send it to a machine shop for the measuring as they will also then be able to tell you what you need to get. You might need a remote but to what size? You might get away with just a hone. The bearings might just need a polish but they may need a grind. But has it already had one grind? On the big ends only or just the mains or both or…..

please don’t try and guess the sizes with your vernier as it is not the right tool for the job.

Unless you've already checked, the prices for boring and crank grinding have sky rocketed, so expect quite a bill, but with the price of power at the moment you have to expect it.

Yup no problem, I phoned about and got the same costs within a quid or so from several companies,
Crank journals £25.00 each ( this used to be around £8.00 )
Rebores around £25.00 per bore, that's for 1 run of the boring machine ie up to +60 thou ( this used to be £15.00 )
Conrod re-sizing £20.00 each
I've actually gone for a company called Damico who are nearly 100 miles from me but I've used before, they are a great bunch and their work is spot on, they know A series inside out, do a lot of very interesting race work and have their own engine dyno if you want that service. This is the company that SC Components use for all their machine, welding work and dynoing, but don't let that put you off.

If I use them, and post my block and crank to them. How many times will it go back and forth do you know?

Talk to them.

provide 5hem with they parts they need and it will only go once each way. As they will need everything for the dry build so they may as well do the full build.

I'm not saying to use them, I just gave their name as that is who I use and the prices to expect, personally I would use a company within driving distance. There must be good companies up your end of the world with a good reputation, just ask around, as for visits I would expect 2, one for the initial machine work and a 2nd for the final machining of the block and head to get everything where you want it to be, as I side point I've also asked them to supply all bearings, thrusts and big end bolts as then you have more chance of everything going to plan and everything within tolerance.

I want the enjoyment of doing the build myself. Plus having them do it sounds beyond my budget but good advice thank you.
