Hi all.

I have recently fitted a new outer cv joint wheel bearings and drive flange. I am getting play (cv moves up and down in the hub). I have torqued it up using the flat washer method and 270mn. Looking at the new cv collar and old ones they don't fit flush on the new drive flange so could this be the issue? I ran out out time to check the old drive flange

They do spring a bit as you fit them.

what do they look like on the other side?
what do the drive flanges look like where the washers fit?

what bearings did you fit?

I fitted one side and they still don't fully push in.
I used minispares ones and had play so fitted timken and still have play.

The tapered collar can be proud of the flange or even recessed slightly as long as it tightens round the cv shaft before bottoming out on the splined part of the cv shaft.  The nut should bear only on the collar, not the flange itself.  If you used the flat washer to pull the cv through the bearings and flange before adding the tapered collar and retightening  to 270 nm, and you still have play in the bearings, I'd be looking at the step between the outer bearing races being worn such that there is no preload on the bearings.

The annoying thing is I had no play before replacing the parts just a loud rumble from the bearings and the cv thread didn't look great. Could the location of the cv joint cause an issue ie not in enough or too far in?

The Tapered Collar really needs to sit proud of the Drive Flange as the tips of the hex of the Nut do over hang the Collar. The pressure from the Nut mut all go in to the Collar.

Just to add the new collar is very loose on a new cv which I have and the old collar tight

The Collar should be loose over the thread on the CV, however, just at the end of that, there should be a step up to a short section that's only a little bigger in diameter than the Thread. It's that on which the Collar must land;-

If it only stops at the step, when fitted up like you see here ^ then you can tighten it until the cows come home and it will never be tight, as the (stupid) Collar is merely closing up on to (effectively) nothing.

There's some more info here;-

Cheers for the advice. I will take a look at the cv joint

Were the bearing outer races a good tight fit in the upright? if they went in very easily I'd say that is your problem perhaps.

They were very tight to knock out and put the new ones in.

All taken apart and even swapped the cv joint. But when I spun the wheel there's tight spots and sometimes no play...
Could the driveshaft end be the issue as in not engaged correctly at the engine end. So frustrating lol.

Something's skewiff but with the drive shaft connected to the gearbox, it can be quite hard to properly diagnose.

It sounds like you've replaced everything but the hub. I have had a few hubs that seem to check out but were originally machined off spec. The tolerances in them are very small and it really doesn't take much to upset that apple cart.

Another thing is if the Drive Flange is a particularly loose fit on the CV, with the split type CV Tapered Collars, they can tend to tilt the Drive Flange as it's pulled it. Sometimes just re-fitting the Drive Flange in a different orientation on the CV splines and / or rotating the Collar to a different spot before tightening can help. Likewise if the angles in the Tapers are different to each other, that could be another cause.

Great advice! Tonight I have measured all the bearing spacers and of course they are different sizes lol. I will try the flange and collar idea, I will check the tapers and the cv joint and drive flange are new.
I don't really want it buy a new hub as I have a fiesta conversion and the caliper lugs are drilled, if I even want to change the calipers I can't.

For information, having just checked a 7.5" hub on mine the nut is well inside the radius of the collar.

Update- changed cv drive flange and collar from the other side and still have play. The cv joint still moves inside the hub. I might bite the bullet and buy a built up hub with the ball joints. It's not worth just trying a hub and different bearings. Just to add when I spin the wheel without the caliper fitted I have tight spots and doesn't really spin freely.
