Joined the forum as I am starting the restoration of a 70 MkIII (per V5).
Also acquired this motor....looks like a run of the mill 1275 except for the number.....maybe a rebuilder tag?

Mmm looks like a 1275 A+ out of a Metro. As for the numbering. No idea.

Was able to remove the plate......"STD M" stamped on the deck underneath....

Standard Metro? Don't think there'd be anything under the plate, so perhaps it's been salvage or a non factory refurb?
The thermostat housing & clutch end breather are Metro & the one on the timing chain cover looks like it might be too. Metros are a round can that fouls the fan in a Mini, so the Mini version has a flat added.

It was a very common thing to do over here. Metros tended to make it in to the breakers' yards sooner and there were a lot of 1275 Metros & older 998 Minis.
Would it have needed an engine number to be imported? Perhaps it was just a convenient bit of metal with stamped code that looked passable?
The engine mountings are different, so it has anything that matches your Mini's on the radiator end that'll be the case.
They all have holes for both mountings on the clutch end so you might be able to tell which have been used - Metro used the triangle of 3 bolt holes about 1/2 way up the back of the transfer case.
