Hi,

I'm a push bike rider and i'm looking for a bike rack to attach to the roof of my 1986 Mayfair.

I really like the idea of the suction cup roof racks but I've a nagging doubt about them.

Has anyone had experience using these? Do you guy's think using 3 strong suction cups on the roof could cause damage to the roof?

Thanks in advance

Almost certainly will cause damage, either way you mount them

I use the Sea Sucker Talon 1 for my FS MTB. Works a treat and has been on several long journeys to North Wales from the South East. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend on a modern car BUT I have found that even on our F-Pace positioning is key to avoiding flex in the roof. For that reason alone I’d be reluctant to try on my Mayfair.

I have seen people using it mounted to the roof with the rear wheel secured on the boot lid. They are designed to work like that so perhaps that’s an option but I haven’t tried it.

I would never trust suckers to hold on any form of luggage, I also wince at those tailgate mounted ones with straps, claps or nothing IMO.

Every year in the 70's while going on holiday up and down the motorways ther would be, at some point, a trail of clothes, belongings etc and then a smashed case or bag which had come off a rack or the whole rack and all its contents spilled over the 6 lanes.
Draw your own conclusions and mke your own decisions on the security of racks.
