Hi

1990 1275 cooper

I recently changed the front springs and fitted hilos. The car is therefore sitting higher at the front than usual (I was letting the springs settle).

The car first of all developed this clicking/ticking noise, when I was coming to stop at traffic lights and had the clutch in. I thought the brakes had surface rust on or were warped slightly- but now I think it’s the CV joints, since the brakes are fine.

The noise is also loud when I steer tight to the left or right. I don’t think it’s a wheel bearing, as there is no whine etc, and no noise when engine is under load.

Any ideas? Could the new higher ride height have put the CV joints in a new position, and thus worn them down?

Thanks

Sounds like a cv joint to me.

I don't think it's a CV Joint as from what you've said, it seems to make the noise when unloaded. It still maybe the CV, but they tend to make noise when loaded, be it on driver or over-run (with engine braking).

Ok thanks. I’ll inspect then lower the ride height back to original, and check the suspension components I had off. Hopefully something hasn’t loosened!

The new ride height might have put the CV joints in a new position and exposed existing wear.

Could just be a CV boot strap/tie.

Ok so I’ve realised that the clicking only happens after I’ve been going 60mph for 5mins or so.
So it must be something heating up…
I’ve lowered the suspension, and will get tracking fixed (as it is currently toe in), and then will take it from there.

That suggests brakes more than anything else to me.

When you get the tracking fixed, make sure that they check the track-rod ends for  (clicking) wear

Give the inner cv`s a wobble as I came across a very worn diff side cover bush that would make a clicking noise rolling in neutral.

It didn`t leak oil for some reason !!

Brakes are fine I think, when I Jack up the wheels spin freely.

I changed the track Rod ends a few months ago, so don’t think there are issues there.

I took a video of each inner CV, but think the amount of movement was normal.
