I have just had Duffy out for the first time, only to turn it around in the garage.

The Speedo needle is bouncing wildly and I probably did not go an faster than 15mph!

What is likely to be causing this?

I have searched, but cannot find anything relating to this problem.

Speedo's internal gears worn or the speedo drive is worn on the side of the gearbox.

A new speedo cable cured my bouncy needle.

Make sure no one has sprayed any lube in through the cable end of the Speedo. Someone had with mine so I pulled it out and got it apart then cleaned it out. That made big difference. However, I did then later replace the speedo cable (even though the old one looked fine) and that got rid of the last jitters.

Make sure there are no severe bends in the cable and the ends are tight.Instead of turning it kind of whips round,Steve..

How difficult is it to get to the gearbox end of the speedo cable?

it's a bit of a fiddle, but can be done;  the thread on the retaining collar is quite fine so easy to cross thread it if you're not careful

removing the radiator (..or the bottom hose at least..) should give you a little more room if you're struggling

You can also access it from underneath & if the cable itself is giving too much fun you can take the bolt out of the cover instead.

Put the front on axle stands with enough room to get underneath slide under with your feet forward put your hand over the inner pot joint you can undo the nut. If it’s too tight you’ll have to undo the bottom hose and get something on it to start to undo it then return under the car. I used a cheap set of water pump pliers and had to cut the handles short. Getting it back on get help to manipulate the cable from above to get at roughly the right angle.
