Thank you everyone.
Looking at the diagrams and posts - its clear I put far too much oil in, then the damper pushed it out and i put more in thinking there wasnt enough as the level had dropped. Repeated about 4 times!
I'll give the plugs a good wipe over.
How do I check if the tube does have a leak - just to be sure (as there was no oil at all in the dashpot yesterday when I 1st thought about checking?

You could remove the dashpot, give the bottom of the piston a good clean and sit it somewhere overnight to see if a leaves a damp patch... or drain it and fill the tube with something more runny... or assume it isn't and see if it uses a suspicious amount of oil over the year.

Really struggling to get it to run right now afyer yesterdays 'service'. Under load the whole car feels.like its shaking, you can feel it through the steering wheel too. Fine when not under load, but load it up and its awful. Any thoughts?

Have you checked the plugs yet?  If one or more doesn't seem to be firing despite being cleaned it may be a good idea to get a new set.  Had to do that to my estate a few months ago.

Plus are quite black, clean them up, go black again. It ran totally fine until after I did the service yesterday (so would be a big coincidence if one of the plugs wasnt working now). Its fine when crusing, but under load really shakes.

If my plugs are black, is my mixture too rich?

Turned the mixture to be a bit leaner.

I now have 3 spark plugs that dont look quite so black (at least not on the top) and one that is still black. Why would one be black still?

And its not stopped the shaking. Its still awful.

Can you see the photos? or link?

New set being ordered! Any reason why 3 would be like the 1st photo and one (2nd photo) being more black?

It may be so fouled deep down that it won't clean up enough to give a good spark, so just fouls up again

Probably a better plug around but also more expensive.  Minispares has a good selection.

But for finding out if fouled plugs are the problem, just get what was in it before.  If the problem persists you won't have spent so much money.

Had the new plugs in for a few weeks now and its running a lot better. Just took them out to check the colour/too rich/too lean etc.

Looking at the photos below - what do you think. I noticed that when removing them that they get progressively sootier. So looking from right to left in the engine bay (not firing order) - nr 1 (far right) is the lightest colour, then nr2, then nr 3 and nr 4 (far left) is the darkest (noticeably darker than nr 1). Is this normal or does something need adjusting?
