I tried searching the forum, however I couldn't find any threads on this particular topic.

On my 1997 MPI the red SRS warning indicator on the dashboard stays illuminated when the engine is started. Is this a faulty airbag or a fault with the airbag electrical circuit for sure, or could there be an issue with low battery voltage or similar issue. I would be grateful for some advice regarding testing/fault finding to remedy my problem. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

It depends what you've searched for.

https://www.google.c... mini SRS fault

This can be a common issue - the steering wheel reluctor ring. Part no. YRC100300.

a really good bit of kit help with diagnostic on Rover and MG cars is Pscan. https://pscan.uk

It will also do Air Bags. It isn't cheap but could save you repair bill in the garage. I coded up a couple of spare keys with mine which would have cost quite a bit getting a lock smith out

Thanks for the advice and signposting me. It looks like it may require a professional to check this one out.

Has this just happened or did you buy it like that?   I've only had two confirmed causes - the steering wheel rotary coupler as mentioned before, and the incorrect wattage bulb fitted in the dash !   They need to be 2.2 Watt bults, if that was replaced at some point with an LED or a commonly found 5 watt bulb, the SRS module thinks the bulb is blown as it draws the wrong current when it does the self test and logs it as 'open circuit'.    The Pscan or ACR4 tools can help you get an exact reason for why it has lit up - it could be other causes, but I've only ever heard of these two as definite confirmed causes.   Hope that helps

Thanks for the comment hennasxi. This issue has just randomly occurred. I've owned my Mini for five years and never had this problem before, and I've also not changed the SRS bulb in the dashboard. I think the SRS system is definitely due a professional check over and it's booked in for a check in two days time.

Right folks.

Attacking this again.

So far we have changed the clock spring.

Checked the fuses, checked the three wires from the fusebox. Yellow to diagnostic plug, purple from airbag module under rear seat. Purple also goes to the dreaded srs dash bulb light. Green is the power from fusebox mounted on drivers inner wing. Fuse humber b5-2 red 10 amp.

The other end of the purple wire goes to the bulb then back to the fuse A4-2...

Checked the pre ignitors all 2.7ohms.

So my thought process is..

The power comes from the fusebox. Along green wire into airbag loom to the module. Then powers that. The purple wire comes from module back to the dreaded srs light on dash.

What else could I do.

Check the clock spring connection again and the resistencein the steering wheel airbag.

The airbag module has as far as I know never been set off.. how sensitive are these? WHO REMANUFACTURES THESE.

When rover suggested the airbags be serviced every 10 years(back in the day) what did that involve?

Also checked the srs bulb is a 2.2 Watt bulb and not a more available 5 watt bulb.

Does the module need a full 12v to function properly. My fusebox was giving me some strange readings. Blamed the voltmeter to start with....

Also found a bad battery -ve terminal on the carso that will get dealt with..

Been over all the simple things but drawing a blank.. someone must have been in this same position with the dreaded srs lamp.

Historically the car had the main airbag loom power plug cut off due to what was advised as low resistance in wire... (not exactly 100% sure what that meant on mot mans report)..

Any help appreciated... Internet seams to be lacking in ideas for me... (other than bulb out or tape over it)

This has been useful for wiring diagram.

I have not had such a modern mini myself so I do not know if they were equipped with belt tensioners ir not. Otherwise, a common problem on other cars is that they have a bad connection to one of the belt tensioners.

From experience on other cars, you may have fixed the fault but the fault status may be latched. Diagnostics may be needed to clear the fault on the unit.

Latching faults is to trap any transient faults on this safety system.
