Good Afternoon All,

So i am having an issue getting into any gear when the engine is running, when the engine is off, i can select any gear smoothly.

The car had been sat around for a month or so and before i never had any issues.

I bleed the hydraulics at the slave cylinder last weekend and the issue seemed to resolve itself, however after a week of non running the issue has returned.

I am thinking I have an issue with the master cylinder or slave cylinder but was wondering if there was any sort of test i can do to determine if this is the issue before i buy a new ones?

Thank you in advance.

thanks

It's a bit of a classic fault on classic Minis. Typically, it's caused by rust developing on the exposed side of the slave cylinder that then gets the better of the rubber seal as it's pushed on to it when the pedal's pressed.

Think I have the same issue- before Christmas, I drove the car for the first time in 4 months. I got about 2 miles down the road and suddenly couldn't get it into gear at all. I haven't had time to look at it yet, as I've been away/ busy, hoping to have a look next weekend. Anything I should be looking out for?

Did you remember to use copper washer between the flexi and the slave/master cylinders?

Also how old is the flexi pipe? These can perish as they are just rubber.

I would also ask what colour the brake fluid was that came out when you bled it the last time?(i trust you tightened the bleed nipple snug..)

are you losing fluid? when slaves fail usually will be fluid behind dust cover and master cylinder failure there may be fluid where push rod meets pedal.

Sorry to jump onto this thread. Not sure if you guys were replying to me or Dutchy, but they haven't responded either.

Pedal goes all the way down, no resistance. There is some fluid in the reservoir, about 1/3 full I think. Not sure how much is supposed to be in there, it's the first time I've looked inside it.

-Not removed

-Presumably 30 years old lol
-No idea when it was last bled, not something I've done yet

Personally I'd be looking to renew the master, slave and flexi hose as matter of course. Expensive, yes but keeps the car on the road.

The clutch master cylinder should be 2/3rds full atleast
