I have a remote shift transmission. I recently removed the shift linkage and housing to clean out the debris and re-grease everything with new bushings. When putting everything back together, I made sure that the shift fork engages with the transmission properly.

Despite all of this, I can now only get the car into 1st, 3rd, and reverse. For some reason, I can’t get the car into 2nd or 4th gears. Any thoughts or pointers on things to check?

You will have miss aligned one or more of the fittings. Or they are loose.

Thanks, I will go back and check how tight everything is. There is a good chance of this because everything was such a sloppy mess before, that I’m not familiar with a properly shifting Mini and didn’t tighten everything enough.

Possibly the lower dust plate is wrong way around?
Seen this before for the same symptoms:-)

surely that would stop access to 1st/2nd not 2nd/4th

seems to me it's more an issue with in/out rod travel not left/right

don't suppose one of the internal roll pins is not punched all the way in or a bush not pressed in all the way, something else jamming it.. etc

I tightened the two large-ish screws that hold the gear lever retaining plate, and I was able to engage 2nd and 4th. I think the problem was that the bottom edge of the gear lever was actually hitting the screw and not enabling the gear lever to travel enough to engage the gears. When I tightened the screws and lowered them, that seems to have given just enough room for the gear lever to travel a tiny bit more to engage the gears.
