hi everybody,   I was wondering any body has found a solution to storing 12 inch spare wheel in the boot of a mini with a 7.5 gal fuel tank ?

the spare wheel is  approx  50mm to big  to fit between the tank and the battery, it looks to untidy for me.

What width of 12" wheel and tyre are you trying to fit? A standard 12" steel wheel will tuck under the tank and fit perfectly, wider alloys will be an issue.

What size tyre is fitted to your 12" spare wheel that does not fit?

eg.145/70 x 12 or 165/60 x 12

anything with 165 tyre on will not fit. we keep a tidy steel spare with 145 tyre in boot and 4 wheel nuts in a bag with it. just like more modern cars with a spacesaver!

its a 165/60/12 on a super Minilite wheel, the only way I've found is to stand the wheel vertical in the centre of the boot and make some sort or bracket to hold it in place, or of course go to 10" wheels.

A 165/60/12 tyre does fit, just need to be at 20 to 26 psi to allow the tyre to flex. I have a 165/60/12 on a minilight rim and it fitted into my 89 Mayfair, and is now used in my 93 sprite (both had 7.5 gallon LH tanks) as the OP has pictured.

How far through the panel does the filler neck sit? It may be worthwhile to Loosen the tank strap and attempt to let the tank sit clear of the tyre.

Of course the only time you'd have an odd size is if you get a puncture! My Mini is shod with 5" x 12" Minilites /165/70 tires, the spare is the standard steel rim usually in the boot of late Model Minis with a 145 section tire. The spare needs to have a 50mph/80kph sticker to be legal.

One of the reason's I don't like modern day cars, a can of air won't inflate a split tyre so you wait for hours until a recovery truck arrives,

Maybe a different battery that's slightly thinner too?

But seriously, how often are you expecting to get a puncture! 

 

A 12" steel with a 145 tyre will get you home or to your destination at a maximum of 50mph, how fast are you really needing to go in a Mini? And if you're really concerned carry a Stop n Go kit and a small tyre inflator as well which might negate using the spare.
