personally, if a negative earth car, i'd fit to the positive feed off the battery - that way, once disconnected, nothing downstream of the isolator can be live (..assuming the engine is not running !)

You can also get isolators with a low-fused bridge wire that allows the radio to retain the settings. But try and start the car and the surge blows the fuse.

worth choosing one with a blade type fuse so you can fit a thermal reset fuse and easily get the interior lights working again (Sod's law says it'll be dark when you try and start the car without refitting the isolator key!)
