Wheel Bearing Noise Or Something Else?

Best Answer MacGyver , 14 May 2022 - 10:10 AM

Sounds like the noise my speedo cable did a few years ago. Try that. It's literally plug and play...

Hi guy's,

I have this bearing like noise coming from my front end so I replaced the bearings with new Timken bearings and it still persists.  So I replaced both inner and outer CV/pot joints and all new suspension  components, from rubber cones, shockies, all bushes, steering tie rod ends, track rods, upper and lower suspension arms and the noise still persists.

This is really starting to annoy and costing a lot of money and every waking time of my life trying to fix?   Any ideas?

I put a Quaife diff and a new 1293 motor in about 12 months ago with new diff bearings and it had been running fine up till a few months ago.

Please anyone have any ideas?

https://1drv.ms/v/s!...H0GTQ4SBnACySLy

It seems to be speed related and doesn't change from the brakes being applied.  Also the noise still persists in neutral and with the clutch engaged?

Thanks

Brad.

Wheel bearing noise is always hard to decipher whether it is front or rear. Look at the rear bearings to eliminate them now before you go any further.

It sounds as though the frequency of the squeak doesn't change as the car slows down?

It's not a very good video I shot but at the end of the video you can hear the squeaky/scraping noise slows down as I do?

I will do a better video tomorrow.

Thanks Brad

You could be right Ben,  the noise is louder on the inside and seems to be coming from the center and not the wheels?  I have noticed my speedo cable is compromised and has a gouge out of it where it has worn through on the extractors but it hasn't penetrated steel inner coil cover?

Thanks

Mine was quite noisy and kept jumping out, can't remember what was causing it as I changed a few things since and it's been off the toad for 8 years...

I live in a remote part of the world when it comes to Mini suppliers so it will probably take about 3 days to get a new cable.

I'm just wandering is it possible to remove the old cable and still drive the Mini for 3 days without a speedo cable?  Would this cause any issues other than speeding tickets, like an oil leak  :shy:

Thanks Brad

There's no issue with doing that Brad.

I have been following this thread after our long discussions and the speedo cable is a good call by Ben - easy-ish to test too.

I don't think it would be a problem as I've driven without one before and never had a leak. Disconnecting it at the speedo should do it, might be easyer than the engine side.
Might stil not be the problem, so you could just pop it back on if need be.
I drove with a GPS as a speedo for a while so that might be an option if you have one?

Thanks Spider,

It was your idea to put the question out here to a fresh new set of eyes or ears in this case. We exhausted all normal possibilities and this is something totally out of the box. I think Ben is on the money after hearing other types of cars with failed speedo cables?

I was thinking of just undoing the cable on the gearbox end to test. Is this the best way to test?

Thanks Brad.

Thanks Ben,

I think I will disconnect it at the gearbox end which I know is a lot harder but that way I will know it will not be spinning at all.

My cousin used to work for a main BMW dealer in east anglia in the 70s/80s and would often borrow a demonstrator if he was visiting the family west of London ..

.. but that was way over the mileage they allowed them to put on the cars ... so before he left, he disconnected the speedo and put it back when he got home! ;) I doubt if they had sophisticated diagnostics in those days where the true mileage is recorded in the ECU as it is now! (He would have been st^ffed then! :) )

That's what I's suggest as that'll stop the cable spinning.

There a few ways to get to the gearbox end of it, these days, I jack up the passenger's side quite high (so the engine oil doesn't leak out), pop the top ball joint, than take out the Pot Joint, reach up from under, it's 'right there'.
