Hello

1993 L reg SPI Cooper, Manual, RHD

Front brakes

I've replaced the hoses to the callipers with Goodridge braided hoses

I have a leak at the right hand side

At the banjo bolt / 2-way union

I replaced the 2 copper washers, securing nut and shake-proof washer at the banjo bolt

The banjo bolt is original

The copper brake lines up to and after the 2-way banjo union on the subframe are original

The two way banjo union is original

There is no leak from the copper brake lines up to and after the 2-way banjo union on the subframe

The leak is coming from between the head of the banjo bolt, the upper washer and the 2-way union

In blue on the attached diagram (but when all tightened up)

I've taken it all apart, cleaned all the parts, reassembled everything and it leaks in exactly the same place

Any thoughts, suggestion etc?

Thanks in advance

Elwyn

Have you annealed the copper washers?

No

Didn't realise I had to do that with a new washer / washers

Replace the washers, heat them up with a blow torch and allow them to cool naturally?

Cherry red, then I tend to quench mine in oil, but natural cooling works, too.

I seem to remember that one of the hoses end fittings was either slightly longer or slightly shorter when fitted to the two way splitter.

I cannot find any documentation anywhere though

Yep, the hoses are handed .

A deeper hole for the union side.

I could not find this when looking:

Pair of front only braided steel hoses. Please be aware these are sided, the deeper threaded hose fits the right hand side, the shallower hose fits the passenger side.
The MS picture says Goodridge, but the current Goodridge version are covered with heat shrink which is a nice feature.

It might be the way you have written this or it might be your problem. There is no shake proof washer on the banjo connection. Just a copper washer each side and they are not the same size.

The shake proof washer (23 below) sits below the nut (21 below) that secures the brake hoses (16 below, from calliper) to the subframe, as they're secured. screwed into the nut (21) from underneath

The two differently sized copper washers (19 & 20) are part of the banjo bolt (18) to 2-way union (17) connection

The braided hoses were from MS, but they're a Goodridge product

The MS website states the following

Please be aware the fronts are sided, the deeper threaded hose fits the right hand side, the shallower hose fits the UK passenger side.

But the two front hoses in the Goodridge pack were / are identical

The two thread depths below were / are the same

Deeper thread?

Deeper hole?

I'm not sure what to look for

if I've got the hoses the wrong way round, that's an easy fix

I'd be delighted with that as an outcome

Is it talking about the internal thread? It is a while since I changed these and mine did not have the brake switch takeoff but a bolt? The picture is incorrectly scaled I think as it would appear that one copper washer seals on top of the nut?Might be mistaken,Steve..

It is the internal thread depth, I believe.

The internal hole is deeper on drivers side and I think has the sleeve on it. It allows the banjo bolt to go further into the hose fitting. Dont ask how I know....
