There's been loads of threads and talk about various Ball Joints over the past few years, in particular, since the original Unipart items became NLA.

One type that has come up a fair bit is the Maintenance Free Joints from Classic Minis Japan. I have recently fitted a set of these and hope to do a review of them later in the year.

Classic Minis Japan also offer an 'OEM Type' Ball Joint;-

I fitted a set to a friend's Moke a little while back, but with Covid, we only managed to seriously test them last May and then inspect them a few months back. Our test track you can see here;-

https://www.theminif...off-again-lads/

I never fit Ball Joints so they are at all tight and of course, i did these in the same way. I found these have a ground finish, just like the factory items did and on a basic hardness test (using a file !), the file just skidded over them like happens on the original joints. So far, so good. I also lube Ball Joints with Molly Grease, same as I use in CV Joints.

On stripping them down, I was impressed with what I found (apologies in advance for the photos - I'm not a photographer !);-

By comparison, from a similar 'test' a few years back with Mini Spares Balls Joints, these didn't fair as well;-

In short, I found the OEM Type Joints from Japan to be good quality, I'd say at least equal to the originals that were made by TRW. I'd be happy to fit these to any Mini or Moke.

And before anyone asks, I have no connection to Classic Minis Japan, these were bought and paid for like any other customer. I've only posted this here as there's been issues over the past few years with Ball Joints and I felt these maybe an option.

Nice one Chris, extreme testing!

So, about £135 a pair less shipping to the UK. Seems a bit pricey when it;s about £25 a pair for Minispares ball joints and mine have lasted 30k so far..  It does give us another option though.

What's the thoughts on lapping in new ball joints?

What's the thoughts on lapping in new ball joints?

I got a MS set recently and had one of the four so badly finished it was jammed solid from rotation with only finger fitment. Very rough ball surface in one small area. Used lapping compound and a quick spin in power drill seems to have cured it. Did rest them with only hand spinning for a bit of bedding. So i'd recommend doing this on any of these MS joints.

The original joints were ground finished and so in all the sets over the years I fitted up, I never found a need to lap them.

I don't know how deep or just how hard the case is on the new joints, on some that I tried, I found the case quite thin and I don't feel lapping them is going to give a good result.

I'd suggest, if one is tempted to lap the joints, give them a file test first. If the file skates over the surface, then it maybe OK to lap them, if it bites, then simply, they are not hard enough and they'll chew up.

Jack the car up.  Fill them with grease, and if they pass the MOT, drive on them for another year.

I believe you can get these now from Guess-works (UK) without having to get them sent from Japan. (Advertised as the same thing)

About a year ago I purchased a full set of MiniSpares ball joints as part of a full, front suspension rebuild. When fitting the hub back on, I was not happy with the ball joints movements. Tight in some places, sloppy in others. So purchased a set of NSR ball joints from Guess-works and binned the MiniSpares ones. A much better fit and no fiddling with shims.

These are a different joint to those I reviewed here.

Those offered by Guess Works are the Sealed Maintenance Free Joints (I'll be doing a review on these).

Those reviewed here are of the same design as the Original Joints and in my view, of similar quality.

I've very disappoint to report that these joints that are currently being supplied as this type, are now very poor.

These were fitted by me to a Moke that did less than 9000 km / 5500 miles

The other hub was just about the same.

I've been in touch (a few months back now) with David at Classic Minis Japan and while he did respond initially (more or less to say that he's received my email), he's since gone quite. I have tried following up with him, but sadly, it seems he's all good while the going is good and has no after sales service at all. Rather disappointing and not a supply I'll be recommending now.

The man is purely all face when it comes to his products. Most of the rubber items I bought from him have perished within a few years.

He has two types of joints on offer. The maintenance free types that get a lot of press and others which are the original type of joint.

These in this thread are the latter.

Sorry to hear this but it is all starting to look a poor show.
