An update to this topic.

I was finally able to replace the fuel cap filter (21A2109) when it came back into stock. I haven't used the car much this spring but as far as I can tell the fuel smell has gone.

A late update to this thread. It turns out my MPI had the wrong/failed fuel cap fitted - it had a non-sealed cap which was venting fuel vapour rather than vapour being collected in the carbon canister. (Tested by blowing through the key hole.)

After changing the cap when I now remove it there is now a slight release of vapour pressure from the tank.

To add to this.  I suffered from fuel smell,  after hard right turns.  Seems the quality of the replacement tank it has is suspect,  the filler cap seat is not perfectly flat, and allows petrol to dribble down the rear quarter on hard turns.  Have seen this evident on many cars at a recent show from visible stains.  In addition, must mean the sealed system is not indeed sealed.
