I've been reading, and I keep seeing buy as big and as high a CFM as you can.. but I'm after a little more specific than that.

As I don't expect to be painting a diffent car every weekend and seeing as a mini isn't the biggest car, would a compressor like this do a decent job?

https://gtair.co.uk/...compressor.html

If so I'm thinking to get this kit..

Has anyone used this company / brand? Any reviews?

Thanks!

I recently upgraded my air compressor in my home DIY garage. Previously I had a 50 litre / 11cfm / 3 hp and this worked well for most applications but it was really noisy, didn't like to start in cold weather and couldn't quite handle the requirements of a small shot blasting cabinet.

I'm planning on spraying my mini this year so I recently invested in a Hyundai 100 Litre 14cfm 3hp belt driven compressor and it's fantastic. It's a lot quieter  and has done everything I've asked of it so far. I've not tried spraying with it yet but I have used my shot blaster and it never ran out of puff like my smaller one did. My windy gun had no problem undoing the castle nuts on the drive shafts the other day either.

Not really an in depth guide I know but personally I'd avoid the direct drive compressors if you value your hearing.

Looks good but you may be paying over the odds for the consumables with the package.I would prefer a 100 or 150 litre tank.A top range gun will be advised by many but the supplied one will probably not be the limiting factor in the results.
Indeed with all the wet sanding and buffing that seems to go on you could possibly get solid colours as good with a brush.
Read seriously about painting safety.Enjoy your journey.Steve..

Appreciate the feedback. I'm now looking at belt driven options. Seems like the 90L ones are pretty common and all look the same.. just a rebranding?

I have noticed though that some suppliers state it needs a dedicated circuit... has this caused any of you a problem? As I don't particularly want to rewire my garage right now.

Thanks again.

The initial start up is predominantly the issue so a standalone 16amp circuit is the way fwd there with a Type C MCB. Is the consumer unit in the garage? If so providing there is enough room on the existing busbar adding a standalone circuit is not difficult.

However in my present house I have a direct drive 100 ltr 3hp compressor which as of yet has not ripped the RCD. I do have a 200ltr 4 hp belt driven compressor I’m rebuilding which I’m sure would more than likely trip the RCD.

So now a lot depends on what you are going to spray as in what type of paint. 2K will need forced air breathing and so the small compressor will not be capable of supplying air and also spraying.

I used my 200ltr for spraying and the 100 ltr for breathing. The 100 ltr did die on me so resorted to using the 200 ltr for both which did work but was a bit marginal. ( at my old workshop)

Belt driven is less noisy but not silent.Routing the air filter outside reduces interior noise at the expense of the neighbors but is needed for painting really.I fitted a car air filter outside in a box to reduce noise and give excellent filtering.Look at it not as a compressor but a fitted air supply.16 amp supply is needed at least for 3hp.They take up a good amount of room.I cannot advise which to choose.Steve..

My old compressor came with a 13A (3 Pin) plug but kept blowing the fuse on cold start. The new Hyundai compressor came with a 13 Amp (3 Pin) plug and I haven't had a single issue with it. I have a 16A supply in my garage and a 16A socket for my spot welder but my compressor doesn't require it.

PS. It's 3HP. Just make sure you plug it directly into a wall socket and not through an extension lead.

Don't know how your garage is wired, but you should be able to replace a socket with a 16 amp breaker. It could be on one already if it's been added as a spur.

I have no idea what the builders did when they built my house... so I've attached a picture. (I'm happy to learn)

What I do know for sure is that I've managed to trip the garage and the house at the same time once before.. although there is no mention of the garage on the consumer unit within the house.

If I'm able to run it I think I'll settle for the Hyundai HY3100P.

I'm not too sure about what paint I'm going to use just yet, truth is I still have a lot of welding to do... but I figured I'd get something now.. and it will come in useful before I get to the paint and then be there ready for when I need it. I guess i could always upgrade later if needs be or get a second for forced air.

Thanks

My (new build house) garage was wired as a spur from the downstairs ring which meant I only had a 2.5mm cable running to the garage. This worked fine for nearly everything I threw at it but when I did a refit in the garage last year I took a 6mm cable feed from the EV charger to the garage and created a new ring from that.

I'd say you've most likely got a similar setup where your garage spurs off the house sockets. Anything that has a 3 pin plug (the Hyundai HY3100P) will be fine as the 13 amp fuse will protect the circuit.

I've just seen your location, you're only 15 minutes drive from me so if you wanted to see my compressor (Hyundai HY3100P) then you're more than welcome to come round one weekend.

I trust that consumer unit is just for the garage  O_O?

What went off in the house when you tripped it? If it was just the RCD I wouldn't worry. You could flick the breakers on the main board 1 at a time & see if any kill the garage, most likely a socket ring.

If that's a 16a breaker for the sockets you ought to be able to wire the compressor in directly using a switch, with or without an unfused socket. Of course, if it trips everything on the socket circuit will go off.
