There really is nothing more unpleasant than an over cammed engine on the road. I guess we’ve all found out the hard way chasing bhp instead of a nice torque curve. Piper BP255 might also be worth a shout. Just fitted one in my latest engine build which is a 1098 + 0.080”.

I’ve run a 266 in a 988 with great results. Not run the EVO001 personally but many people claim it’s great in a 998.

That's interesting, thanks. Not heard much about the 266 and I think the vote is more for the Evo001 (which is also relatively cheap!). I think that, together with an upgraded slotted oil pump, is the way I will go.
Again, many thanks everyone for your really very helpful responses
Best wishes

Just my opinion, I know its work & probably the wrong time of year to be considering it, but if theres any kind of crunching in the gearbox I would remove the lot & sort it out. Any kind of metal debris will floating around will wreck your engine & cause a lot more work than you already have.

Very good point, thanks. I will check the oil filter and I have a magnetic sump plug I will also have a look at as well as try to bring forward the inevitable engine removal. It is a bit frustrating as I have had the gearbox out twice already for professional repair for the same problem. I understand, though, that there is a quality problem with third gear synchros.
Kind regards

Be a dabb hand at engine removal...i managed running to engine out and new one in, within a mere 45 minutes. .

Wow! Took me 2 days just to get it out last time, but that included the time to make all those diversionary cups of tea! I suppose the more you do it the easier it becomes, although I have absolutely no intention of testing that!

Hi Mike
The magnet will not pick up any bronze or aluminium particles, although you may see them in the oil. My Engine & gearbox had never been apart, however when I stripped it I found aluminium swarf in the gearbox blind holes & a quantity of it had made it into the oil pump. Thankfully none of it had travelled any further & all the engine bearings were fine. It did wreck one of the gearbox bearings causing the noise I initially stripped it for.

I hadn't thought of that, thanks. I will dismantle the oil filter as well as comb through the oil to see if there are any signs of particles of any nature. If there are then I will have to remove the engine and gearbox without driving any further.
Many thanks again for everyone's advice.
Very best wishes
Mike
