The holes are for 9/16 nuts. Would you drill them out to take 5/8 nuts?

The width is circa 28mm

14.3mm to 15.88mm holes.

no one makes the 9/16ths of with a shank of 45-50mm any more. I can but at 5/8 shank and 44mm long. Drill the holes or machine the new nuts or make new nuts?

What shank length can you get?

Comparing to a cone nut I don't see a problem as far as the stud is concerned. I'd think sleeve nuts rely more on their washers for holding the wheel.

44mm is the longest, ideally I could use 50mm but that could cause problems.

So no 9/16ths available at all?

I can't see the nuts sticking any load directly on the wheels, they'd practically have to be an interference fit to do that. I'd say it's about having at least as much alloy in contact with the drum/drive flange to make a decent compressed wheel "sandwich filling" under the washers. Looks to be chunky enough from here.

They are all short. And Revolution have not made wheels with them for about 20 years. They still do them but in a 5/8 OD this is for the formula Ford cars.

As far as diameter goes Mamba nuts would work although Mini Spares don’t state the depth. http://www.minispare...10.aspx|Back to

If those don’t work on the depth I would rather turn a set of nuts down slightly than modify the wheels. Centring up each stud hole on a mill would take an age compared to turning nuts down.

They are about 20mm too short.

I'd machine some nuts down to size. That's what I did to get some locking wheel nuts to fit.

If you find you don't like it for some reason you can still go down the open holes up route.

Personally I'd try to find or machine wheel nuts or studs and only drill the wheels as a very very last option

Without any maths, just looking only, I wouldn't be drilling the wheels. To me, it looks like there's a minimum amount of meat there already.

Looking at the sizes of the shank of 9/16" nuts the OD of the shank appears in the range of 0.543" to 0.547" with 9/16" being 0.5625" so there is a fair tolerance.

The 5/8" shank nut should be OK to machine to size without compromising it, leaving a wall thickness no less than the 9/16" version, as long as the flat washer does not foul, and seats on the wheel, and a good radius is achieved where the turned down shank meets the hex.

From your pictures the wheels look "used" and as such I would ream the stud holes out, all to the same diameter, to give a nice bore and then machine the new nuts to suit working the size out from the tolerance stated above.

The only problem I can foresee that if the nuts were zinc coated this will be removed with the machining, so they may corrode, but if stainless this will not be a problem.

Yep you are all heading down the lines I was thinking.

yep the photos are of a wheel that has not really been used just sat. Wear on the holes is next to zero.

just need to work out costs now. Modifying existing nuts or have new made, as well as getting the wheels refurbished.

I am a blacksmith, for one sixteenth on the diameter I would have filed them out or on a good day used a sanding drum on a Dremel. What could possibly go wrong?,Steve
