To have a chance of this working, drain the coolant, loosen ALL the head nuts and then the rocker nuts. I reckon you’ve got a 50/50 of it being successful on a standard engine. I wouldn’t contemplate doing it this way on anything remotely modified.

I have just backed off the adjuster nuts on the rockers and the taken the rocker set off and replaced. If the rocker set is to be off for a while I refit the posts and torque down again. Never had any problems.

I know that when removing the head that manuals state to loosen the stud nuts in the same order that they are tightened. Can I get by with just loosening the four rear stud nuts and the rocker adjusters to change rocker/shaft assembly or am I asking for trouble?
I would try it, I've done it in the past and got away with it. You must loosen the radiator cap to make sure there's no water pressure to blow through the gasket joint and replace with the new shaft immediately.
