Hi,my 1978 aussie moke has had its 998 engine replaced at some point with another 998,the diff ratio in this engine is unknown at the moment,I do have a 4.1 crown and pinion I can fit,is there any other ratios worth considering for the moke on 13 inch wheels.thanks.

don't know about moke specific but assume same as mini. a good all round diff for 13inch is usually 3.44 or 3.1 moving to 2.95 on 13s would be sluggish. a 4.1 would probably be too low on13s espescially if doing any distance or a road/ motorway. could try putting diff and wheel combo into guessworks calculator to give you revs per mph in fourth

Aussi Mokes run a larger diameter 13" tyre than European Mokes .The standard diff is 4.1 which would be great for off road but I would think give a top speed of about 70 KPH . Sellect your diff ratio based on what you want to do with the Moke ,off road, road or highway.

As there's a variety of tyre sizes and profiles in 13's it's not easy to suggest a final drive ratio without taking this in to consideration.

I would however suggest, based on my own experience, that if you tale the wheel size in to account, a reasonable all round final drive ratio for a 998 Moke is one that will give you around 14 - 15 mph (23 - 24 kph) per 1000 engine rpm in top gear. With this final drive, you'll be able to cruise on 60 mph (100 kph) and yet be livable around town.  While a taller final drive may at first glance appear appealing, you'll quickly find that you won't have a decent cruising speed at all and that when the Moke looks at a hill, you'll be shifting down and then twice more when on the hill.

If you feel you'd like better performance than this, then you'll be wanting to do engine modifications or change to a bigger engine. I found an 1100 engine a good size for a small bore in a Moke.

Thanks for the info,I am thinking about using 175/50/13 tyres,on the moke,on some alloy wheels, the car will only be used on a and b roads no motorways where I live on Norfolk/Suffolk border, will take a look at guessworks site.

As the Mokes can run substantially larger tyres than Minis, Except for the early ones or the “English” ones, due to the longer rear arms  a final drive more suited to the ADO16 cars may be more suitable. But as you mention 175/50 R13 a Mini ratio will do? 3.44 best all round final drive.

I'd agree with Nick, but as it's a 998 & I assume you're not that interested in refinement a 3.7 van diff would make it a bit more lively for those wide boots.
