I am looking at getting new tyres for my 89  with stock Rover " minilite " type wheels which I believe are 4.5"

Are 165/60 ok to use on these, or should I be using 145/70?  Advantages/disadvantages of each?

Thanks

Correct they are 4.5" wheels. I run 165/60R12 Yoko's on my stock Rover minilites (a 1990 car) with no issues. Assuming all suspension/steering parts are std (eg not running lowered dampers/shortened trumpets etc) and not been messed with, you'll have no issues.

They fill the arch better and give the appearance that 10's in the arch over the OEM tire (145/70R12).

They also hold the road better.

They may make the ride slightly harder over the sidewalls of th 145's.

Go for the 145's if it's originality that you're after.

🙂

Thanks very much.

Not after originality.

Car is strictly a road car, no rallying etc.  has a fast road 1130.

Our roads are fairly crappy over here.  I realise the taller 145 may be smoother, but would def like to fill the stock arches.
No suspension changes other than adjustables in the front...but I don't have them too low.  Stock brakes, lower arms etc.

165/60/12 should be OK on a 4.5 inch rim. You have more choice in tyres at that size. If recommend Falken Ziex ZE 912 (possibly superceded to ZE914) great tyre for the price.

Not sure Falkens are still being made in 12s.

The difference in overall diameter is 5mm, so negligible change to the sidewall

Huddersfield might have a set .. their last but all the usual places to look are out of stock and Falken's website don't seem to list any tyres in 12" sizes.

I'm a huge fan of the Yokohama A539 tyres. I've had Falkens in the past but did not really like them in wet or cold conditions.

never even realised that falken had stopped the 12inch tyre, looks like yoko only option on 12s then.

For the last 16 years of production at least, the 12" cars were almost all fitted with these, which are now being remanufactured.

If you want to be original, that's the way to go, however as with most here for a daily driver car I'd recommend the Yoko A539s. Hugely improved grip, heavier steering, as to whether they're more fun, that depends on your viewpoint.
