    Starting My Mini Up

Evening all,

So I have just received my 1998 rover Mini Cooper here in Alberta Canada, however before I can get it on the road I have to complete a modifications to pass inspection.

One is adding a third brake light which is easy enough, the second item is having daytime running lights.
These lights must come on automatically when starting the vehicle and have to only be on the front of the vehicle.

I have a couple of choices, either somehow make the low beam lights come on as soon as the car starts or I can add some additional lights like spots and have these come on.

I’m leaning towards adding some lights and taking the power from a non switched ignition source in the fuse box.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Hi, I made the decision to fit DRLs but I didn't want to add more lights to the front. I converted the indicators to a dual filament bulb holder (land-rover tail light) and fitted clear covers. I sourced some switchback led bulbs that have both Amber and white light. They have inbuilt circuitry so that when the indicators are switched on, the drls go off for at least 2 seconds.

I wired the drl into an ignition live (you could trigger it from the alternator so it only comes on when the engine is running) and set up a simple relay to switch them off when I turn the headlight on.

Simple to fit into existing mounts, looks stock. Wiring was simple too.

I was looking to fit something like this and possibly incorporate them into the grille.

Don't know anything similar is available in Canada.

Here’s a video example of the switchback LED bulbs mentioned above. They are 1157 bases and light up white when the power is turned off, then switch off momentarily to flash amber when turning

Aussie minis had a dual filament bulb holder so they are a simple plug & play (along with an led appropriate flasher unit)

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.
The dual filament is a nice touch and especially if you don’t want to put fog lights on the front.

Has anyone got the official part number for the Land Rover rear lights?

Is the side light/DRL bright enough in daylight?

I used AMR6516R from bearmach.com and then bought the clear lenses.

If you buy decent bul s then they are plenty bright enough, as much as many other cars.on the road. I have had mine in for 5 years and they haven't failed or lost brightness. I bought mine from https://www.classicc...ulbs/switchback
