Ok right so do some of the chains have less stretch in them when fitted ? which may take up the slack if I swap it over ? for example the limited stretch minispares one below.

2H4905EVO - Mini timing chain duplex limited stretch type (minispares.com)

that's certainly possible, but by no means probable

the reality is that every single engine is different ( crank to cam distance, cam & crank sprocket sizes and wear etc) so the chance that any chain you buy is going to be a perfect fit for your engine is very slim

That does look one tooth retarded on the big pulley.
It is wise to always measure the cam timing accurately because some replacement parts can cause a build-up of machining tolerances and end up with the cam being several degrees out.
One of the biggest timing error I have seen was, from memory, about 7 degrees when timed dot-to-dot with a new Kent cam and budget duplex timing gears. An offset Woodruff key soon sorted it out.

Thanks, I’m going to get another non stretch duplex chain and see if this helps with the slack.

It’s my first time using a DTI gauge, please can you guys confirm that the below is reading 3 thou ? As I believe this gauge reads in mm (0.03mm) this picture is my crank end float.

3 thou would be 3 thousanths of an INCH, not mm.

That DTI is reading 30 microns (assuming that the pointer moved directly clockwise from the 0 and hasn’t done a full rotation or more) or 1.18 thou (0.00118 Inches).

Thanks for the help, so calculating I need 0.08mm on the gauge for 3 thou ? Should the crank have some play then when moved side to side ? Initially had new standard thrust washer set in there at 0.1mm which I now know is 3.93 thou but you could hear the crankshaft move side to side is that correct ?

Ideal longitudinal crankshaft end float is between 0.002" and 0.005".

I’ve now set up the crank end float as per below which shows 0.08mm or 3.15 thou. Is this ok for clearance?

3 thou is absolutely ideal.
