Hi guys! I have fitted a new speedometer in the Mini. The problem has arisen with the 'speedometer cable' because I have bought it a length too long. I have directed it as well as possible and on its way it first goes down when leaving the clock at the back, then it enters the engine compartment and goes straight, then it takes a turn to go down to its housing in the gearbox.

The question is, can it work like this? I don't want it to break or damage the speedometer.

Thanks in advance!

It will work like that but will have a short life. You may find at some (all ?) speeds the needle may not sit steady too.

Try letting it loose to see where it naturally sits.A bracket to the bulkhead triangular bit may be an idea.Steve..

usually route mine between carb and rocker cover then over down to gearbox and works fine.

Won't be much use on this LHD car though

Mine had a ludicrously long speedo cable on it when I bought it.  A new one is only €20 or so I'd fit the correct sized one.

Cheers guys! The cable is 36 inches and yes, this Mini is left hand drive car. A question; Is it convenient to grease the inside of the cable before mounting it or is it not necessary?

It is common on classic motorcycles to oil the inside of the cable before fitting. I use a small funnel at one end and tape to stop it leaking.

I always grease them. They seem to come with a little grease on them, but I feel it's a bit light on.

Not too much .. if it gets dragged up into the speedo it can gum it up!
