Am in the process of installing an electric fuel pump in place of the mechanical one. I currently have one fuel filter installed in the engine compartment and am wondering if there is a benefit to installation of an additional filter between the tank and the pump. The only downside that I can think of is that it could be a pain to replace on a regular basis. Thoughts??

Edit: Just read the Hardi fuel pump introductions and they recommend a filter, as what looks to be standard practice, between the tank and pump.

Normally a pre pump filter will have a coarser filtering medium, mainly to keep out any big chunks from the tank.

Post pump you’ll want a usual filter to keep the carb/injectors clear

could use standard injection filter that mounts to subframe, but yes it's a pain to change but factory fit if you have to have one. some pumps just have gauze trap on inlet

Probably will stick with a single filter located in the engine compartment.

If you do fit a filter pre-pump with a diaphragm pump, like the SU and Hardi, as hinted at by soncar, if the filter blocks up, the pump will stall in an energised state and burn out in fairly short order. Yes, I am aware what's in the Hardi instructions and surprised they don't include a caution note.

So, reading between the lines, if I place the filter pre-pump, potentially it could clog and cause the pump to burn out. Or, if placed downstream of the pump, there is the possibility of debris from the tank fouling the pump. Didn’t the MKIII Cooper S have an electric pump and if so, where was the filter located?

Our locally produced Coopers  and Cooper Ss had no filter at all. According to the Jag guys, the pump can cope with some debris going through it. I'll say from my own experience, with some very dreadful fuel and loads of outback sand & dust, yes, they do cope quite OK.

Thanks for that Chris.

As I mentioned in a previous post, my current filter is located in the engine compartment, between the engine driven pump and carb. Both of my tanks are in great shape with no corrosion and I have had no issues with filter contamination since I put the car together 17 years ago. Thanks to all for the input.

Some pumps will recommend both. The pre pump one wouldn’t need to be changed very often

Out of paranoia I fitted a disposable filter between tank and pump - using a facet cube pump with prefilter anyway - and a cleanable glass filter  before the carb -  has been in for years and no issues at all - the disposable one next to the tank has caught a few bits but everything is perfectly clean going into the carb - self admitted overkill but effective nonetheless...
