Hey guys

I'm trying to test out the electronic ignition on 2 old distributors to see if they are functioning. A 45D with luminition magnetronic electronic ignition and a 23d with an electronic ignition (not sure of brand). Ill be using the test rig as per accusparks video below. My main test battery died last week. All I have now is a small 12V 7AH 20HR battery. Would there be any issue using this for the test?

A quick Google says that battery is good for 10 times the current you need.

I've got it all hooked up now but I'm not getting a spark when I rotate either dizzy for some reason

I've got 12.9v on the battery

I've got 5.17 ohms (20k option on multimeter) on the spark plug.

Dizzy & Coil both getting 12v.

Not sure what the issue is. Pic below. (I was locked out of my shed so had to improvise on the floor)

No its not. oh bugger seems like I completely missed that. Putting it between a vice should ground it right? or do I need to attach a wire between spark plug and battery neg terminal or spark plug and ground?

There is an earth on the dizzy. its on the vaccuum. black wire. (disregard the dizzy on the right, I was meant to take that out of the picture, its disconnected in the pic)

You might be better off connecting earth directly to the body or the clamp.

You also need an Earth to the Mounting Bracket of the Coil or at the very least, connect the body of the spark plug to the Mounting Bracket.

Noted, ill do the suggested connections. thanks for that. Will test again today and hopefully come back with some positive results.

So i connected the spark plug body to earth, connected the coil mounting bracket to earth. And dizzy to earth.

Same issue as before. Everything has 12v. No spark.

Im pretty sure the lumenition electronic magnetronic ignition is dead. I remmember about 15 years ago i took my mini to a mechanic who disconnected it to do some work. When he went back to reconnect it he plugged the positive into the negative on the coil by mistake because the symbols were hard to read on the coil; and he was just lazy to bend over and check properly. Luckily i was there at the time and remember hearing a bang and smoke coming from the dizzy area. I remember the car not starting after that so I had to replace the dizzy to get it going again

That time I didn't really know much and was very new to minis. Took the "specialists" word and replaced the dizzy.
