On my Mini, the rear windows appear to work fine, and stay open on the latch until you drive off!  Then they shut themselves.  Doesn't take much of a vibration either.

Really annoying, as I think I would have one open a lot of the time to boost ventilation, if it would stay open.

Do they all do this?  Does anyone have a trick to prevent it happening?

Let me know, one of mine does it too.  Tried squishing it, nothing

The later Mini rear window catches seem much more flimsy and prone to shutting....cost reduction at the expense of quality I suppose.

The price of 49,500 Yen, (£330), is a bit eye watering. The BMW E46 coupe had servo motors on the rear windows in a similar position. With bit of ingenuity, you might be able to make these work, and they are a lot cheaper.

Mine have only done this once, when at an angle to a strong gusty wind. Can new fittings be swapped in?

My late father made me a pair of tiny hardwood wedges for the windows on our Thirty, push them in up by the hinge, between the window frame and the rubber seal. They keep the windows open and no problem with them closing. Just remember to take them out before trying to close the windows!

Been using these since 1990 across all my minis, they live in the door pocket and are as much part of me as my cars are. Lovely sunny weather brings back happy memories of my dad whenever I use them.

A solution doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated.

Might need to brush up on my woodworking skills...  Simple solution

Any chance of a picture?

The catches should go "over centre", i.e. go past the widest opening so (wind) pushing on the glass pushes them against the seal instead of shut. Perhaps you can help them in staying over centre with a spring or magnet?

There's plenty of weight in the glass to throw them full open, you'd want to increase the bias to them returning to over centre rather than shut when the weight or air pressure pushes back them in.

In my experience the earlier Mini rear window catches went properly "over centre" and were much more robust, the later versions are cheap, flimsy and often fail to properly "over centre" when open.

I cut two short lengths of fuel hose and stuck them in the latch from the window to the seal, works a treat.

I seem to remember using elastic bands on the catch. No idea how though as it was in the 80s.
