Im trying to figure out if my '88 saloon should have pre-drilled/tapped holes in the upper roof edge of windscreen opening for the three hole type mirror bracket.
Car is fully restored with some non original rearview mirror thast has two mounting holes instead of three. Cannot feel any other holes beneath the newer headliner. If I have to drill new holes, i'm concerned about going too deep and damaging exterior roof panel.

If you are concerned about drilling too deep, use a drill stop.

Winguard fixing holes. I found it difficult finding the holes with a finger so on my vinyl headlining I used a pin.

I'm fairly sure 1988 would have been a Wingard mirror attached with a sucker & two screws (3rd screw not fitted -cost cutting by Rover!! not even sure if the 3rd hole was even drilled on all Mini bodyshells)).

There was a dipping & a non-dipping version of this mirror (I always replaced any non-dipping mirrors on my Minis).

Here's one so that you know what your looking for (this one is missing it's sucker)-

Put the mirror base on a bit of wood thick enough so the pointy end just pokes through the other side. Flip the wood over & you have a guide that space the holes correctly and prevent drilling too deep.

How deep is too deep? Hard to tell distance from the outer skin. What is actually being drilled, just a bit of sheet metal or is it some kind of solid lump?

The metal is likely 1.6mm (2.0mm at the most) so make any depths stops according to that.  You'll feel when you've drilled through one skin and then into the void behind.

I'd use a step drill rather than a twist drill then it won't drag its way through (and kind of has its own depth stop built in when you hit the next diameter).

Somerford list the fixing screws as 1/2" countersunk 10UNF so I'd say that easily gives you 1/4 of an inch.

Even MPi shells have the holes there already, I use an earlier one.

Are they threaded, or just stamped out?
