Going back to this, I am going to buy the below lead and permanently connect it in the engine bay for easy trickle charging, as the way my cars are parked in the garage, it is easier to access the front etc etc.

So am I best off attaching it to the starter motor?
Any tips and tricks much appreciated!
To the starter motor itself, no. If you meant attaching the ring terminal of the charger lead to the starter solenoid lug that supplies power to the starter, then yes. That is how I finally decided to do it. Then ran the the wires aft along the existing loom, found a convenient spot for a ground and located the connector next to the bulkhead/firewall. Happy with the result.
Edit; Should note that I have the earlier inertia type starter that uses an inner wing mounted solenoid.
