ordered a differnt hose from ebay- hopefully a different manufacturer -see how that goes. When i replaced the clip the braiding '' bunched up'' a bit and i'm not entirely convinced that the little rubber end cap is sitting well on end of hose

I agree, I've used it on one build as it was easier to get hold of locally but going forward I'm only using standard non braided hose

okay- replaced hose today with 1/4 inch braided from minisport- went on easily - still leaked petrol- so tried a smaller clip at the end- still leaking ( fuel collecting on top of float chamber.
Am i missing something ?
Yeh, braided hose is terrible. Replace for R14 and you'll be fine 👍🏽

Northern Ireland will not be getting the E10 until next year

so tried new hose- still leaking.
So , do i need a smaller diameter hose- original measures as 8mm - so allowing for it being stretched a bit wouldnit have been smaller i.e less than 1/4 inch ?
Or, is it possible that theres a problem in the float chamber causing a build up of pressure forcing petrol out ?

so... emailed minisport- and they confirm the hose size is correct- i've used braided and unbraided hose- and tighter hose clips- and still it leaks.
Minisport say it could be a problem with the float valve sticking in the float lid.
Is this just a case of undoing the screws and having a look ?

This is the fuel hose you need (see link), I know it says out of stock but you can still order it, there are probably other sellers out there as well. Steer clear of eBay for stuff like this buy from a reputable seller which Moss are. As said previously get rid of the braided hose, looks pretty for a bit then it goes dull and collects all the crap floating around in your engine bay and you won't see it deteriorating until it is possibly to late.

The picture you posted before was of a float lid with a baffle plate. The baffle covers the breather / overflow hole in the float lid - fuel here can look for all the world like the hose is leaking from the hose because it's directly below the pipe connection. So it could be a faulty needle valve or just a some foreign object preventing the valve shuting fully. Remove the float lid, float and valve and give it a good wash out. New valves are in short supply for some reason (get a new float lid gasket though).Is this just a case of undoing the screws and having a look ?
Having said that, I'm not a fan of braided hose - you can't see what's going on under the braid.

When my float chamber lid was accumulating fuel residue, I snugged the lid screws a wee bit and the problem seems cured or now.

okay- ive had a look at the float and needle - cleaned them a bit- and checked they move freely. Put them back.
Now car wont start -
fires occasionally but just wont go properly .
On the plus side, theres no sign of any fuel leak now despite repeated cranking- last night the fuels started coming out within a few cranks.
Whats the best way of getting it started -tried choke half out , cranking for 15 seconds, then stopping, pump gas a few times then repeat crank, then wait 5 minutes before starting again. This worked previosuly.

Sounds like you've messed something up, perhaps with the float valve setup? After lots of cranking, pull a spark plug and give it a close look and a sniff? Wet with excess fuel or bone dry? Try connecting plug to its cable and clamp to engine ground. Have someone crank engine while watching for a good fat spark.
