Hello- 1990 1275 cooper

I recently replaced my front left swivel hub, as the ball joint seat had worn. I refitted it to the car, along with the wheel bearing which came out of the old hub (it was only a few months old).

After a drive or 2, the bearing started making awful noises, so I took to a local mini garage who took replaced the worn bearing for me.

However, as they went to tighten up the castle nut, the whole assembly was going solid. They think the hub is faulty. Minispares are sending a new hub this week.

Has anyone else had problems with the swivel hubs from minispares etc? The only thing I can think of is that the inner shoulder is not the correct thickness, as this would cause the assembly to seize.

TIA

What bearing was ordered? Did the fitter fit it correctly?

not sure what bearing they fitted, but I assume it was correct and correctly fitted. The garage specialise in classic minis.

I've recently fitted a new hub and bearing and have had the same problems. When torqued the wheel couldn't be turned and now the bearing needs replacing again

wow that's interesting! Exactly the same problem.

Did you buy a new hub to solve the problem?

I didn't buy my hub from minispares as they wouldn't sell me one due to them being in quarantine for some reason but I'm assuming they came from the same manufacturers to have the same problem. I've got another bearing to fit and if the same happens I'll see about sending the hub back.

I have also just had wheel bearing failures on both sides of the car with the new swivel hubs I just bought for my 7.5" conversion.... Torqued to spec and they felt tight but I thought they were ok. My hubs came from the mini side of the business that is MGBHive in Wisbech but presumably they come from the same source.

Im about to fit new bearings and I am going to try and go slightly lower on the torque.

The hub I purchased came from retrospares on eBay which I believe is the mgb hive. I've just sent them a message on eBay to see what they think. Don't bother doing them to a lower torque as I did that and now need to replace the bearing as its grumbling

I shall email them also as I also bought mine through eBay.

ONLY use TIMKEN wheel bearings, all the others lock up when you tighten the hub nut.

I would agree and would happily pay for them but good luck finding them at the moment...

Nonsense. Why would minispares sell the cheaper ones if they were not fit for purpose. The problem here is the hubs being wrong not the bearing

You clearly haven’t driven a mini more than 1000 miles with these fitted.

So why are the bearings in my passenger side hub still perfectly fine and why have 3 people all with new hubs experienced the same problem? You clearly don't understand the problem here

Lol, is your mini a daily driver, get abuse, how many miles? non genuine bearings don’t last, fact.

Just because minispares sell it means their fit for purpose, let’s face it, if they sell this.

Calling out ‘nonsense’ is so ironic 😂
