Hi everyone - hoping that someone can point me in the right direction as this problem is driving me crazy.

Problem - I have oil fouling the spark plugs on ALL cylinders so bad that it kills the spark within a minute or two of running. I took the head off at the weekend, checked for a warp, replaced the valve seals and the head gasket. There was an incredible amount of oil in every cylinder. Same problem when I tried running it after the new gasket and seals.

The engine was rebuilt - rebored, new pistons and rings put in about 2k miles ago. Ran a compression test this morning and I got (in psi from cylinder 1-4): 160, 165, 180, 170.

Before I rip the engine out and strip it to find the cause, does anyone have any ideas?? Could an oil pressure regulator sticking open cause this? At my wits end.

Did you get a lot blue smoke when running especially on the over run or on hard acceleration??

It could be the oil control rings were damaged on installation or not bedded in.

Also for an engine with 2k on it since build I would expect to see the compression across all pots a lot closer than what you have now.

No blue smoke - it was running a bit rich and stopped belching black smoke on startup once that was sorted.

Oil level is not too high

Valves all felt snug in their guides when I replaced their seals.

It's as if oil rather than just crankcase fumes is being sucked in through the breather into the carb and going to all 4 cylinders

Are you sure that this is oil and not fuel?  What is the carb set up and how was it tuned?

Can't figure out how to attach pictures in this platform but they would be helpful here.

It smells like oil rather than petrol. It is thick and feels like oil. After de-coking the piston crowns and cylinder head, the residue was still black so I doubt if it is petrol just blending with the deposits in the chamber and looking like oil (my original assumption).

Mmm if had been running rich for sometime then you will have had bore wash potentially.

To add, ref pictures. Personally i use Imgur which enables you to post your pictures directly without us having to click on a link.

Its free, so when you add pictures to the platform, click on your the picture in question and a separate box appears. This will show the picture you want and to the side will be a series of links to use.

Click copy on the BBCode (message boards and forums) and then post directly here and job done.

Having had another look at the pictures there seems to be tracks of oil running from the head studs. Now i'm not sure if any of the studs could potentially break into the oil galleries or not. Maybe one of the engine builders on here could shed some light on that???

I wondered about that too. Discounted the idea as crazy and that it was more likely the result of oil splashing up the cam follower and push rod holes and getting sucked through a failing gasket.

Might pay you to have a word with https://www.theminif...r/103875-ozoap/

He is doing my 1293 Seven port build and is a top man. He is just off the M23 at Gatwick. Super helpful and has a very good history with A series engines and look up OAP Racing Engines on FB. https://www.facebook.com/ozoap/

Do a leak down test. With that amount of oil in the bores you'll have good compression anyway.

The bores I can see look very shiny for so soon after a rebuild.Barring damage affecting all four bores it is rings, valves or breathers.Disconnect the breather and try it.If the breather puffs smoke a rebuild looks likely.Good luck,Steve..
