Whistler - having not replaced one before, I'm not sure of the setup, so would you mind explaining what about the tensioner is difficult to set up?

 

I would have assumed that it was essentially a sprung arm...?!

It's adjusted using a slotted slide. How tight should the tensioner be to the chain is what I stumble at, hence duplex without a tensioner.

They do have a flat spring as a backer to the tensioner, I've never found any info on setting them. Long long ago, I discussed this with a mechanic friend and he said that he set them as tight as they would go. I've been doing that since the mid 80's on goodness knows how many engines, as mentioned in my last, never had an issue, but these have all been on Leyland / Rover originals.

 

I'm sure if they are set with insufficient tension, the whip from the chain wil soon beat them to death.
