Hi All

I took the Cooper in for its MOT today, and it failed on emissions, it has only done 500 miles since last year. There is no CAT, just twin box RC40. pretty standard set up.

Spark plugs look ok, he said it is like the choke was stuck on. It wasn't.  I adjusted the tick over down a bit, and took it back. I did notice that the throttle pedal didnt fully spring back up and you had to manually tap it up to get the idle down, but I wouldn't of thought it would have failed so badly with just that.

Any ideas?

Theres a big difference in results. Can only assume the slightly high idle and the sticking pedal were the problems.

Was the engine run to temperature on the first test?

Well it was driven 5 miles, stopped for 10 mins, and then run for around 5 mins before test

The high idle could have taken it off the shoulder of the needle onto the taper?Steve..

Carb? This sounds like sticking choke linkage (the choke acts as a cam on the throttle giving similar symptoms to what you describe).

The fact it only did 500 miles in the last year won't have helped the emissions.. Sometimes a decent run ahead of the MOT will bring the emissions down.

Sounds like the carb does want a clean out and set up, as a high idle will affect the readings

I always give my cars a good thrashing on the way to the MOT station and make sure they're fully warm

When i give my car a thrash to the MOT it is usually because it will undoubtedly fail and i want to make the most of getting as much fun from the drive as i can..

If it breaks on the way to the test then hey hoe....

Crawl home if advisorys and then fix em and full beans again for another year....

I had an Orion. I went to Oz for 18 months, came back and drove it to the mot station and it failed on emissions. Went for a hoon for an hour and it passed

Thanks all, I did give I a pretty good trash the night before and on the way there, around 5 miles. Then when I took it away and went back, that was a 8 mile round trip.
