Just wondering if anybody has thoughts about e10 fuel coming in September this year ? How will it affect our old cars, I read that cars with variable jet carbs are OK but other carburettors will have problems, also the ethanol will rot fuel tanks and fuel lines.....!

Loads of thread on here about it.

things to change. Rubber hoses, fuel pump. And the float chamber seal, valve if not made from suitable rubber.

or just use the 98 Octane fuel.

I've moved the topic.

There's all sorts of classic cars and motorcycles that will have to run 98 Ron.

I wonder if it'll lead to any other issues?

I believe it corrodes the metal fuel lines and also the float bowl on the Carb.

It's cat's pee.

I've just spoken to Burlen (SU) about their products regarding E10 and I was told that they foresee no problems and that their maintenance kits can cope with modern fuels. They will be revamping their website later this year and updating the info on there. As usual they are very helpful on the phone.

One other specific item that maybe easy to overlook is the fuel pump, particularly if it's a mechanical one. They have a Rubber Diaphragm in them which will likely rot, unless it's fairly new.

I'm aware that the current SU Kits have components that are E fuel compatible and have been for a couple of years now. In regards to the Fuel Bowl, as the E Fuels contain a lot of water it's that that I believe does the damage here. I know from Carbs I've pulled down to overhaul, any that have had any water in the Fuel (that ended up in the Bowl) there's always as a minimum, white powder coating the lower parts of it and where it's been there a while, they end up with pin holes in them.

Some fuel stabilisers and lead additives claim that they stop water retention so this is worth considering.

Don’t forget the pressure regulator if fitted.

Just stick with E5 and all will be fine. There has not yet been any suggestion that E5 will not continue to be available.

basically just replace all the rubber bits that you should have already replaced and you should be ok, and fit a fuel filter while our at it.

Government will both ways: E5 will only be available as the higher priced super fuels which bring in extra tax and E10 will see consumption rise as it's less efficient so you use more and pay more tax! Sneaky!

Some interesting info here along with a book which has some testing and actual technical data with recommendations.

https://classicengin...MENU_MainMenu=5

The good being it shows some better performance if tuned correctly. The bad - well pretty bad if you get water in the fuel system :o
