hi just had my front and rear subframe
sandblasted sorted bits that needed welding
so ready to paint
I've got hammermite metal paint
I've got also
2 types of primer
got the red oxide hammermite also
zinc 182 isopon primer
my question is do you think I need the primer
hammermite paint says no need for primer.
after I painted I also have hammermite underbody seal as well
any advice
cheers

I have done my subframe in red oxide primer, then gloss black. It wont do any harm having more layers of paint for protection.

The only issue you will have is painting it with the primer, ensuring all areas are covered and no runs, then having to do all that again for the top coat, which will probably be two as the red oxide paint is hard enough to cover with just the single black coat.

I would not be tempted by Hammerite.Epoxy primer then 2pack gloss black would be my choice. You may not have the facilities to do this though.Steve..

I painted an early rear subframe with Hammerite, and it lasted and lasted, so it is ok

I then went to 2 pack for frames, but as you have not got the gear - then no matter

Get the Hammerite paint warm, makes it easier to apply, but probably do 2 coats.

I wouldn't use any of the underseal on the frame any where though

Ok
should I use the hammermite paint straight on or use their red oxide primer first?

Hammerite is good but not as long lasting as a 2k black. I use 2k Ford Black ready mixed

No harm in a bit of extra paint, so by all means use the primer you have

It is extra paint on a vulnerable item of a Mini

I'd get some etch primer on as quickly as possible as steel will start to rust immediately it comes out of blasting. Are you using spray Hammerite? I found that it is quite thin and runs easily whereas the tin stuff is quite thick and can be difficult to get into narrow spaces. I've stopped using it and instead use aerosols of 'tough' acrylic paint that seems OK so far (6 years since I did my subbies)

Hammerite is definitely not as good as it was ... no doubt some bureaucrat's decision to reduce or change the chemicals in it. I've found hammerite on my 61 year old Austin's fuel tank that is still OK, but a garden swing frame I painted in the 90s has flaked badly.

i see gazza82  ive already bought 3 tins of black satin and 2 tins of primer  here in italy

i was thinking after painting it to go over it with hammermite underbody seal with added waxoyl  on the subframes

I painted a subframe with Hammerite about 15 years ago and it's still looking good. No rust, just a couple of stone chips. When painting it I made a point of making sure the paint got well into the narrow areas at the front sides by tipping the subframe onto it's front and literally shovelling the Hammerite into the enclosed areas with the brush and then laying the subframe down so the excess paint drained out of the drain hole, then repeated and tipped it onto it's top so the paint spread into the top inner surfaces. I wouldn't bother with spraying, you can't guarantee getting the paint into the corners. It doesn't take log with a brush.

Use some 2k cans and A2P3 masks. It's what most (read all) industrial machine shops do for repairs.
