I've been using Screwfix cold galvanising spray, it's weldable. On panels I have painted in epoxy then ground areas to be welded to bare metal and coated in the zinc primer. Once welded I recoat with the primer, but usually go back and cover with epoxy primer

I thought zinc/galvanised surfaces gave off highly poisonous fumes when welded?
I would personally used weld through primer on weld sites.

I use Upol's Zinc rich weld through primer. Also if you can get to the welded flange / area afterwards, i use a piece of scotchbrite to remove any burnt bak primer and then re coat.
Areas like the outer sill, the best thing you can do is force some epoxy primer into the void followed by topcoat (is does not need to be anything colour specific, plain Black will do.)

Most weld through primers contain zinc. Pretty much the same thing as cold galvanising spray.
I would guess the coating on hot galvanised sheet metal is thicker and more concentrated than what comes out of a can
