Has anyone fitted one? Any problems with it not being a direct replacement for an original pre-engaged starter, ie it’s not compatible with the ring gear?

First things first. Count the teeth on your flywheel and the teeth on the starter.
the flywheel may not be correct or you may have an incorrect starter but you really need to be 100% sure of what you have.

I know it’s wrong Nick, the pre-engaged starter has 9 teeth and the power lite has 11. I didn’t know this when I fitted it, I thought it was a direct replacement!
I’m wondering if I’m the only person stupid enough to assume this? Nothing on the minispares site suggests it’s not compatible.
A standard starter works fine, so I’m assuming the ring gear is standard.

Don't know how many teeth a pre engaged starter has as I've never got that modern!
My inertia slimline powerlite starter has 9 teeth.

I think it does, the same as the pre-engaged .. the power lite I have has got 11 teeth. I’m thinking MS sold me the wrong one ..

Looks like you need an inertia starter and have been sent a pre engaged one.

Nope. You have your numbers wrong. The starter is correct. You just don’t have a standard Mini set up.

how come I put back the standard pre-engaged starter and it works fine?

What year is your car?
If it's the mk2 in your profile it would have originally had an inertia 9 tooth starter.

I bought one. It was one of my worst ever purchases. The first one failed after 100 starts. The second chewed up the flywheel gear and knocked it off the flywheel far enough to only intermittently engage the teeth
It was awkward to wire up and bolt on.
It should have been so good, being made in UK, but I went back to the standard eventually.

I wonder if it did that because they gave you the wrong one... yes, they’re a complete pain to fit!

It looks like there are some pre engaged starters out there that have a 9 tooth pinion that are designed to work with the inertia ring gear - this might be what you've taken off your car.
I have the 9 tooth version of your powerlite starter and it works fine with a 107 tooth inertia ring gear.

Like I said at then start count the teeth. Never presume you have an original spec anything. Other A series cars used 10 tooth starters. Not good for a Mini. And then you might have a flywheel that has had the ring gear changed.
Your stater is correct. But your build is not standard.
