‘87 998cc, 8.4” standard discs, EBC green stuff pads, no servo.

Hi guys, I fitted new EBC green stuff pads around 200miles ago and they still squeal horribly. I see mini spares sell anti-squeal shims, will these help?! I assume the fit between piston and pad, with a dash of copper slip?

I did put copper slip on the back of the pads when fitted, and the squealing has calmed down a bit, but I’m still getting looks from other drivers/pedestrians when I pull up at a junction for all the wrong reasons! Any advice greatly appreciated :-)

Are the pads free to move on the slide areas on the hub? Sometimes the powder coat on the pad is too thick and causes issues.

Did you follow the EBC recommendations for bedding them?

They were quite a fiddle to fit so maybe worth checking thanks!

Yes I noticed that after buying them lol, to be honest I think they are overkill for what I use them for, I never had an issue with the standard pads they replaced

Yes and no, iv been going steady on them, maybe I just need to be a bit more patient and wait longer, doesn’t help I don’t do many miles and the family don’t like coming in the mini at the moment because of the squeal!

Get some brake anti squeal product from your local auto parts store. There are spray on or smear on types. I use a blue liquid in small bottle which applies like thick paint. A thin smear, left to set a few minutes, no more squeaks on my Mini and classic motorcycle.

I’d be tempted to beat the sh*t out of them by doing a few 60-10 stops as they suggest, it sounds like they haven’t worn to the shape of the discs yet, that can cause the vibrations that you’re hearing.

I thought their website states to use them lightly for the first 500miles? To be honest it can’t make them much worse so maybe I’ll find a quiet road and throw the anchors on a few times lol

They seem to put the emphasis on the amount of contact between the pad and the disc, once that's established over the whole pad you can do the 60-10 stops that they mention. The problem is that everyone has a different opinion of what light use is, so (in some cases) they never get used hard enough to achieve the initial bedding in.

Had the same issue with my EBC pads, fitted the anti squeal shims and been fine since. I used copper grease on the back of the pads too

Do the brakes squeal at high speeds or is it just at the slower speeds and did you replace the disc rotors ?.

EBC Green Stuff pads are not really a "street" pad, more for driving like "you stole it". These pads are relatively hard compared to OE and as such tend to squeal at lower speeds until they bed in.

If the disc rotors were not replaced at the same time bedding in can take more time, as the pads do not "mesh" with the rotors.

There are products available which claim to reduce squeal but check first that everything is assembled correctly and the pads have bedded in before going down that route.

Personally I'd bin any EBC pad and fit something decent such as Mintex or Ferrodo.

They only squeal at low speeds, and the discs were new at the same time. Think I’ll give them a bit longer to bed in by the sounds of things!
