Did you shim the primary gear properly when replacing the clutch, and did you lube the bushes before refitting them (lightly with oil, not gallons sloshed all over it)

Only a guess here as I'm not familiar with the Verto Clutches.
Try backing out the bolt on the Clutch Cover that holds the Slave Cylinder Bracket and possibly the upper 2 bolts on the engine mount. It could also be one of the bolts on the timing inspection cover (but I don't think so).
It would also be worth checking the crank end float too. A check check here is with the engine running, have some one operate the clutch while you observe (closely) the Harmonic Damper, you shouldn't be able to see it move axially at all. It may even be worth checking it (engine off) with a DTI, using a Lever to push the Damper towards the Engine and the Clutch to move it back the other way.
If these check out, then I'd say there something rubbing on one of the gear teeth in either the drop gears, first motion shaft or laygear, though I'm struggling here to think of what that could be, however, if it is deemed to be in here, the engine needs to come out and at the least, the transfer housing come off. Before doing that though - and you could check this in car - with the flywheel removed, spin the primary gear and see what you can hear / feel.

IIRC the Verto is a slightly odd in that the release assembly is in constant contact.
To me it sounds like the release bearing is lose and is being rattled and shuts up when the pedal is pressed.
just a thought you did refit the rubber O ring or fit a new O ring.
