Have y'all noticed that Esso has changed their 97 octane fuel to 99 octane?

They promise it's ethanol free in large parts of the country too!

Nice.

What Esso says about ethanol content of their fuel:

The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains up to 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 and 99 grade petrol).

Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97 and Synergy Supreme+ 99 ) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area, Scotland and NW England). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+  – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area, Scotland or NW England. The European standard BS EN228 covers the requirements for 0-5% ethanol unleaded petrol, the labelling requirement for zero % ethanol is E5 (as is up to 5%), a E0 label doesn’t exist. We understand that this is confusing if you are looking for zero % ethanol fuel, but as advised we can confirm that our Supreme Unleaded fuel supplied in areas except those listed (Devon, Cornwall, Teeside, Scotland and NW England) is ethanol free.

The Government are putting the content of Ethanol from 5 to 10 over the next couple of years

Don't shoot the messenger -that is what I have heard.

Ethanol in a fuel tank is b*ll*ck*, but the great Government believe and say it brings down carbon emissions

They are not bothered it corrodes and damages British Classic cars fuel systems

Ethanol comes from sugarcane

Brazil made it mandatory back in the late 70,s to add to fuel, they even got a car to run on it entirely

Awful stull

Nope. They have been selling both 97 and 99 for years. Some stations only sell one version some sell both it is down to the station owner. And it is not ethanol free it is up to. And the areas that have ethanol in is because believe it or not the fuel supplied in certain areas all comes from the same tanks. The drivers add things to bring it up to the required levers for the stickers on their trucks. The base fuel is all the same. I would say that if you look into the other brands in the areas listed and not listed I would be surprised if their ethanol content was any different to Essos.

It’s not because the base fuel is the same that they all contain ethanol. Ethanol gets mixed in as an additive as well. Shell makes the same claim on their Vpower 98, and it doesn’t contain ethanol, easy enough to test for ethanol content.
Advertising something as ethanol free and then still put ethanol in would be a party for lawyers and claims.

Shell V-Power pumps at my local garage have the "5" stickers so they don't claim it is ethanol free.

The truck driving down the road may say Shell on it, the next two may say BP or Esso or whatever, but the fuel all comes from the same refinery.
