Hi

I have a 1275 A+ engine in my ‘65 Elf, I am flushing the cooling system but only ever seem to be able to get around 2 litres in the system. I have a drain plug fitted to the bottom of the radiator so have been draining it from there.

I thought the cooling system held 3.5 litres but can never get much more than a couple of litres in it.

Am I correct in thinking that some of the coolant is not draining out of the block?

There is coolant in the car heater matrix too.

I get around 4 litres in mine although I think the Radtech radiator is a slightly higher capacity than standard.

Yes. Draining the Radiator only, does partly drain some from the Block, but a lot will still remain in the Block. Most of the Blocks have a Drain Plug on the back of the Block, near where the Clutch Slave fits up. The late A+ didn't have a Drain here though.

Correct, capacity without heater is 3 litres according to Haynes.

Thanks Spider, you are correct, the block on my A+ does not have a drain, the boss on the rear of the block has not been drilled.

I now realise that the water pump is above the lower water level in the block, so does not drain out all of the water.

What concerns me is, I drained the system a couple of years ago as there was not antifreeze in the system, but the block would still have contained water which could have frozen in my unheated garage!
