Hi everyone, I know this is another done to death topic but I'm considering replacing all the bulbs (exterior and interior) around my Mini with LED's (Apart from headlights).

I know already that I will need new flasher units, and also that I won't change the ignition warning light, but for the rest I'm just interested in finding out what other people have got up to in terms of outcome and where they ordered them from.

I have Classiccarleds.co.uk and dynamoregulatorconversions.com already on the cards to get them from but I'm trying to make a little sense from the mess of information on previous threads about bulbs. Any input is more than welcome thanks a lot.

I replaced all of external bulbs (apart from headlights) about 3 years ago and bought everything from classiccarleds. They recommend coloured leds for the indicator and brake/tail bulbs which I have and the colour under the red/orange lenses are really good, brightness is also good. No problems in the last 3 years, no failures and the only other thing I did was to replace the flasher and hazard relays for electronic ones that can cope with leds. Make sure that you clean the bulb holders up before putting your new bulbs in, otherwise it's largely plug and play.

Couldn't ask for a better response so thanks for that. Forgot to mention about making sure the LEDs are coloured too as that is rather important. So 1 point to classiccarleds by the looks of it.

I put some tail/stop LEDs in mine about 6 months ago, also from Classiccarleds, much brighter.

Ones to avoid - I bought the Philips 1157 red stop/tail LEDs and they are hopeless in the Mk1 taillights.

The Philips LED illuminates on the side, not the end and on the Mk1 taillights this is directly into the side of the bulb holder so I only got a very faint glow through the lens.

I am sure in a more modern lamp with a reflector bowl they'd be fine.

This is the type I had, though not from this shop.

Bulb list (external)
233 or 501 front sidelight
382 front indicator
380 stop/tail
382 rear indicator, reversing, foglight
239 number plate

These numbers are referenced on the listing at classiccarleds.co.uk and are listed by type under the 12 volt section in their catalogue

They also do a flasher relay (https://www.classicc...k-x-l-p-2-3-pin). I didn't use this one and just bought a led compatible one from amazon because it was out of stock at the time but they all tend to be similar, 3 pin instead of the original 2 pin but easy to wire in, generally just needs an additional earth

I had a box arrive from Classic Car LEDs yesterday!

I bought enough LEDs to convert the whole of the car, with the exception of the ignition warning light. I bought headlight and side light bulbs as well in warm white. I don't have any intention in driving at night, but as I was replacing all the rest of the bulbs, I thought I might be fully LED'd.

My car is a 1991 Cooper Carb, and I had already changed from sealed beam headlights years ago, so the sidelight bulbs may be slightly different, but listed below is what I bought:

Headlights                     H4 Pair of Warm White LED Headlights H4 Hi/Lo Beam Conversion 9-32V Excellent Beam Pattern                                                          H4ZES1WWx2

Side Light                     501 GLB501 T10 LED Warm White Capless Wedge Bulb Sidelight Number Plate Interior                                                                           12VT10WWN

Reverse Light               382 12V BA15S WHITE 21W LED 4014 SMD BULB CLASSIC / CANBUS P21W GLB382                                                                         12V382WH

Interior Light                 239 WARM WHITE INTERIOR COURTESY / NUMBER PLATE LED BULB GLB239 GLB256 C5W 35 - 37 MM 12 VOLT FESTOON         12V36WW

I'm having problems with my ignition warning light (Classic Car LEDs) funnily enough after swapping, what's the issue with replacing the bulb with a LED? I did wonder if it was the LED, swapped that bulb back to original and it still doesn't work.. I wonder if I've killed something?

Unlikely you have broken anything. The ignition warning (charge warning) light has 12v going to each side when the alternator is running and so the light does not illuminate, it is not just a simple case of 12v on one side and ground on the other.

For the alternator to work, the field coils inside must be energised and it gets this initial current from the flow through this charge circuit. If you replace an incandescent filament bulb with an led one there there is often not enough current to excite the coils and start the alternator off. You need to keep the original bulb or have some sort of resistor in the circuit to generate a sufficient current. Most people keep the standard bulb.

This bulb also serves to highlight if the circuit itself is at fault when you turn the ignition on. If your charge light does not illuminate when you start the car, this indicates a fault with the circuit and means that the battery is unlikely to charge once you start up. If it lights up when the car is running it indicates that the alternator voltage is less than the battery voltage so it works in 2 ways.

Thanks, that's very helpful

I wouldn’t be putting in LED headlamps as strictly speaking it should fail the MOT due to the recent changes to section 4.1.4

Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.”

Update, I ordered some stop/tail lights from Classiccarleds and just fitted them. Hasn't quite gone to plan as the brake lights don't come on, they only flicker if the sidelights are on also. Anyone got some help for this?

Could you have fitted the bulbs the wrong way round? I have found before that this is possible even with the offset pins. This could explain your symptoms.
