Hi to all! 

 

So I am currently restoring my mini and am sanding down and preparing suspension components for respray. How do you usually progress in this regard? I mean, components like the rear radius arms, front/rear wheel hubs etc.. are generally cast iron components.

 

What kind of primer do you use?

Is it ok to use a normal primer or etch priming is more recommended?

Is red oxide primer sufficient?

If so which products please?

Doing this job myself so can chip in a little.
I am using Jotun 87 epoxy primer and will over coat with somewhat standard black paint.
Some people reccommend using zinc rich primers, and before getting the epoxy I would have considered using this too. (Screwfix here have a cheap "cold galvanising" spray rich in zinc that's reasonably priced). I think etch primers tend to be for non ferrous metals that develop a natural coating hence the etch is needed to adhere to the surface, so might not be necessary with some of the components.
You'll hear red oxide does not get great reviews as it's not like the traditional red lead paints, some people say it's normal primer tinted red but may be okay depending on conditions and use.
I was going to powder coat but there's reservations over chipping and rust developing underneighth with that I've chosen Jotun as I believe it contains rust inhibitors and gives a strong finish. I am also planning to use it on the floors. The Jotun is made for marine purpose so thinking it should help keep rust at bay. Then again the roads in Malta are going to be a lot more forgiving than the salty winter roads up north UK
