Hello!

Approx 4 years ago I bought this 1974 Malta Built Mini. Have not had any time to open a new tread, however better late then never....

When is saw her immediately, I knew I was going to buy her and name her Suzie.

Anyway, some information:

Painted in a thick layer of Amarillo Yellow - Oil Based Paint. It had more orange peel than an orange. and literarily you could not scratch it with a screw driver and expose the bare metal.

Interior: Some tatty set of seats out of a Fiesta or Skoda and black headlining

Mechanicals: 13 Metro engine, drum brakes all round and was recently overhauled (3 years prior).

ICE: none except no parcel shelf as it had 4 massive speakers installed prior

The main objective was to get her back on the road ASAP so as to have a driving mini. up to now 2021 I still do not have a working & driving Mini.

The original plan:

Sand the whole car down to get a fresh layer of yelllow paint

Re do all mechanicals

Possibly change the 1275 metro engine to a 998

Re do seats using a set of metro or Mini

get it passed our VRT (MOT)

Soon after the last photo, I ended up with  a number of clients to re do their classic car and left it on the back burner to be done.

Fast forward a year and 5 other minis purchased ( to be restored one day ) and works continued.

Plans changed:

998 Turbo engine {suck through system/draw through}

interior to be re done in full (obtained a complete interior of an MG Metro and decided to use it)

full re wiring

Paint: Ford Mondeo Imperial Blue similar to Cosworth Purple Blue with Black roof

ICE: x4 Target Components, Pioneer Headunit & JBL sub just to have some background music ;)

I did not want a show car finish but a good-looking mini to be used and abused.

Changed the 998 head to a 1275 metro head. Also had several issues with my SU and found a 1inch Brand New Stromberg....

Looks to be a great start point for a cracking little project.

Personally I'd keep the 1275 (as long as its in good condition) But definitely look at upgrading the front brakes.

Would make a good sleeper mini.

Good luck

She was almost finished and could take it to the VRT testing station however, after a long day at work ..... I ended up putting a turbo on it.

3hours later it started.

---- This is an experiment. all pipework will be re done----- I used all bits of pipework that I had laying in the garage. ----

Nice concept, obviously the turbo downpipe position will be your issue.. as well as the draw through system. Fuel hitting a 60-80,000rpm blade makes me shudder!

Yep still experimenting.

Yes the downpipe currently is still in the "testing phase" will be re-done at a later stage.

Draw through is a very crude system. I have read several comments both on here and on Turbominis. Obviously the blow through is more favorable as per its various advantages.

Im still testing the water ;)

Suck through might give some "interesting" oil consumption, also that down pipe will need to be further from the clutch resovoir.

3 hour turbo fit is quite impressive though.

Took me that long to fit the interior light the other week  :D

I have a slight issue....

I have fitted 2 boost gauges, one on the manifold and one directly to the turbo housing (bypassed the wastegate). any one experienced low boost on suck through? i.e. 0.2 bar?

bernoulli's law?

yes, however i would not expect to be at 0.1-02 bar boost.  the only restriction is the carb which is approx 1 icnh.
