nice car, but expect a 3k+ bill to fix the transmission..
But I'll give you 2.5k for it.

Well that's depressing!
If that's the case I might as well break it for parts

Only if you think you can break it for more than 2.5k
I am being slightly tongue in cheek but there's "restored" shells on Ebay going for £2k!

Surely a complete engine and manual gearbox swap that'll cost you a grand will be worth 5-6k when done?

I'm forced to agree with the comments already made it probably £2.5k to £3k as its future is likely be a conversion to manual for the points Guessworks already made.
The prices for engines and manual gearboxes in good condition are rising steadily on the other hand the cost of mechanicals versus bodywork makes it worthwhile if you or a potential buyer either has the bits or can source them at reasonable cost. Far rather do the mechanicals on a solid JDM shell than the body on a rotten UK one with good mechanicals.
Apart from the obvious parts for the manual conversion it would be possible to fit a good earlier and more plentiful SPi motor and gearbox with some wiring changes and either the earlier ECU or use an MPi flywheel with the one on it.
Could make a nice project

Low balls you then makes you an offer, wonder why.
Pinch of salt..
Becuase if you read the rest of the comments, it's about what it's worth with a failing transmission....
Normally I would not have even bothered with an offer, but it's local and I like it, and I'm probably one of the people about which can do pretty much all the options available.

Well this morning I thought I would have a go at seeing if an oil change would make much difference.
It had 10w40 semi synthetic in before, so I thought I would try 10w40 mineral instead.
The slipping on kickdown has now all but gone. It still flares though on 4th gear most of the time.
So now I don't know what to think
Also during the change I found that the oil filter housing was very loose, which might explain why my oil light was previously taking a long time to go out (I think the filter was draining each time the engine was switched off)

Don't over tighten the bolt through the oil filter, I have new filters and O rings here in Rugby... bolt only needs tightening to 14ftlb, any more and you can mishape the cannister and it'll leak oil for ever more.
If it's have some dubious oil through it it, then you will need to change theoil 2 or 3 times as you only ever ( at best ) change 2/3rds of the oil in each change..
Once it's started flaring into top, then there's no real coming back, the damage has been done.
