Hi Gaspen,

Unfortunately, you are absolutely right. However, this cannot be undone, or I'm not really willing to undo it, so this is what my car is going to have.

I'm sure epoxy or etch primer would be the best solution, but I'm already passed that.

Let's move on and get this car sorted.

Cheers.

Victor.

High build primer forms a thick coat of paint that is suitable for sanding. It is not suitable for applying straight onto bare metal (it would flake off). Cellulose and 2 pack high build primers are commonly used in the UK. In the US it is common to use epoxy based primer.

to be honest your at the stage now where the underside is perfect to sort with no fuss, its your choice though, high build offers no protection or adhesion qualities that etch or epoxy does. I’ve used proxl epoxy, very nice to apply.

I’ve literally just bare metalled, rust converted, epoxied, gravitex, primer, base then clear coated my full underside on axle stands, many an hour spent, and
I know I wouldn’t want to do it again in a hurry.

Hi Gaspen, Midas

This product can be used on bare metal as per the below technical sheet.

I understand that epoxi or etch primer is probably a better solution, but this is also good and indicated for the use.

I appreciate the comments, but as I said before I'm not going back and this is the route I will be following.

Cheers.

I bought this from a neighbour that wasn't using it anymore., and I got it very cheap, so no brainer.

It is a bit old and noisy, but works perfectly. 25l and 2hp. That should help with the paint works.

Cheers.

First day using the compressor and the paint gun. What an increadible piece of kit. I did some testing before on cardboard before using it on the car. It works quite well, the finish is very smooth and the coverage is great.

First I spent some time masking the area that I was going to paint, the inner wings and some litle touches on the boot floor and car floor.

gZwA9G0.jpeg

Then I started painting with the paint gun, and found a bit difficult getting into the inner wings, as there's not much space. However, I manage to get it done with a nice smooth finish.

Then I moved to the boot floor and started sealing the seams. You need to take your time doing this, to ensure a good penetration in the seams and a smooth finish.

I still need to go over a couple of areas, but so far so good.

Until next week.

Cheers.

This arrived today.

I think perhaps with 2l should be enough but the price difference wasn't that much. Not sure if I can apply 2 coats of Gravitex, but If I can I would do for extra protection.

Cheers.

Moving on, I finished with the seam sealer at the front of the car as shown below.

Then I started masking the car in preparation for the Gravitex.

I prepared the Gravitex can and did some testing on a piece of cardboard. The orange peel finish was coming along very nicely.

And then I applied the paint on the car. Quite easy and straightforward and the coverage is quite good.

I'll do the front end tomorrow, but leaving aside the engine bay, for which I don't want the orange peel finish.

Cheers.

I took advantage of the good weather and decided to paint the car outside the garage. A lot of prep required to cover the engine bay, using all I have in hand...

q7cWUdP.jpeg

Not the most beautiful masking, but effective.

5euJRXg.jpeg

Gb79eVo.jpeg

Then I applied the Gravitex, which was a bit difficult inside the inner wings, as the paint can and the gun took a lot of space, and it was difficult to reach to all areas.

ogPzigT.jpeg

3bDPUzs.jpeg

I also took the opportunity to go over some other areas that I missed on the floor and boot floor. Looking good.

I still have like half can left of Gravitex, so I'll go over again some areas with that and it should be ready for colour!

Cheers.

Exciting day today, as some colour got in!

First I added a bit more of seam sealer to that area, as the finish was not good and water could get in.

w1EeWUU.jpeg

I gave another coat of Gravitex to the inner wings, as I missed a couple of spots.

ebIjxik.jpeg

This is the paint I got, 2K Brooklands Green. All the paint (2.5l) plus hardener and thinners for £100.

jHHGkfr.jpeg

rqBguWQ.jpeg

And once I did the mix I painted the car with the air sparay gun. It went well, but I would need more training before trying on other areas more visible.

Such an important milestone!

Quick update, got the whole underside of the car painted in Brooklands Green, including the inner wings. I used around 500ml of paint in total + hardener + thiner.

All done now, looking good.

Next week I'll take the car off the jig and get it prepared for our house move at the beginning of December. I still need to figure out how I'm going to transport the shell and the engine (on a engine stand with wheels). The new house is only 2 miles away from this one, but I won't be able to put the Mini back on its wheels, so it would be on a trolley with castor wheels.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Victor.
