And you're still using that K-RUST rubbish ?

Hi Pete, yes. There's not much left in the bottle, so will stop using it soon... Lol

I've used it extensively as well, seems totally fine to me so far (and when used in the past, not sure if recent changes have occured?)

also https://www.hagerty....d of our month.

I've got a few tins of the top product on that review more for convenience of covering larger areas than anything else

obviously where possible (and in worse conditions)  the best option is always to cut out and replace with new metal but just for some surface rust i'm fine with it

Agreed!

I use deox gel from bilt hamber rather than the hydrate/krust stuff. It seems to be good at removing the rust from the panels and the gel is usable on the panel that are still on the car.

Cover the rust with the gel, then cover with cling film. Leave overnight and then wash it off. Usually back to shiny metal after one treatment.

Deox c is also good but you have to bathe the parts in it so no good for panels that are on the car still.

Cheers Mito, very good advice. In this case it was only surface rust, so K-Rust was okay for it.

Thanks.

A bit of work done today, preping the scuttle panel.

First I painted the areas that will be covered by the scuttle and will have difficult access later on.

Then I aligned and clamped the scuttle.

View from inside, all reasonable aligned...

I marked up the A-Pillars cuts, and started cutting the old bits.

Same on the other side.

And zinc primer to finish it off. I only took a pcitures of one side...

Next was to prep the scuttle panel itself. Removing the black primer in key areas on both sides.

And applying zinc primer only underneath the panel, where access will be more difficult once fixed to the car.

Next week should be just getting the panel back in place and spot weld it to the car.

I have located a couple of wood pallets in a house nearby, which I will pciking this week to build a 'trolley' and remove the jig. This would allow me to install the bonnet for final aligment of the scuttle.

Cheers.

Victor.

Very long Christmas break, but finally made it into the garage today.

First of all I built the trolley to remove the jig from the car. A couple of pallets and 4 heavy duty castor wheels should do it.

Next job was to remove the jig. This is a two men job, but as it was only me I needed to find a way to do it myself. I used the jack and some timber to take out one side at a time.

The shell is looking quite good out there...

And finally it is on the trolley.

Then I aligned the scuttle and put the bonnet back to ensure everything is aligned. I think it looks pretty good.

Once I was happy with the aligment it was time for the spot welder.

And to finish it off, I spot welded the scuttle to the inner wings.

I still need to plug weld the cuts along the windscreen, which I'll try to do tomorrow.

Cheers.

Victor.

PS Happy new year!

Glad to see you back at it and making great progress! Did you find the spot welder heavy by the time you had finished along the window? My arms were hanging off me lol

Cheers Colin! Yes, the spot welder is very heavy so I took the time and did a few welds at a time. Also you can't really do the whole thing in one go, as the machine will overheat and stop working. This is keeping me fit! LOL

Nice to see you back on it Viktor.

For the doors you could make up the part thats missing.  Make it from tow pieces the curved part, then make up the lip to suit.

Leave it over size and trim back when the other parts welded in.

Dear all,

Apologies for the radio silence. We are trying to buy a house and a great opportunity came up in the market, but we were short in funds.

Then I thought it was a good idea to sell the Mini, so I put it for sale... For obvious reasons nobody is going to pay £7k for an unfinished project, so the car did not sell...

So, we missed the house opportunity and the Mini is n o longer for sale...

Even my wife said, why are you selling the Mini after all the work you have put on it???

Anyway, I will keep the Mini and I'm hoping to get it finished at some point in the next few years...

Thanks for the comments and concern.

I'm not done with this project! :))
