I also had to make my own to fit on at the alternator mounting point.

And that way you have free access to both end of the engine block.

I am not sure how that engine mount fit, but I made one to myself fitted to the alternator "nuts". I built up the whole engine assembly on it and it didn't collapse :) It was a good practice on welding.

I know it is far away but you shouls install these maintenance-free ball joints from Japan

Guessworks - NSR Baljoint - Set of Four BTRSC-NSR4 (guess-works.com)

Hi Gaspen, thanks for the feedback and the photo. I was thinking perhaps to start with, to put the engine on a platform trolley, get it clean and then put it on the engine stand. It seems that most people use the alternator mounting nuts to fix the engine stand plate. I will do the same, as I'm not very convinced about what I have done so far with my engine.

Thanks also for the link to the ball joints.  These are a bit pricey, but I'm sure they will be worth the money!

Cheers.

If I remember correctly, it doesn't fit to well on the standard engine stand unless you bolt it from the clutch housing side, obviously with the housing removed.

I also had to make my own to fit on at the alternator mounting point.

Hi Colin, thanks. I will adapt my mounting plate to suit the alternator fixings.

Cheers.

I bought the ball joints from Japan where they produce them - I paid "some" (lots of) VAT and duty for the import :(

Two weeks before John Guess became a distributor in the UK.

I imported some of these ball joints last year for my sports pack.

The bottoms were knocking within 3000 miles. The plastic that fills in where the domed seat would usually go had become detached.

They are a nice idea but unfortunately aren't worth the money. I replaced both bottoms for the original style and will swap out the tops before imm.

Yes, I saw that and commented saying that I also have one (no response from the guy). The car is rare, but £15k is probably too much! You can get a decent MK1 for that money...

Thanks mate. It is good to have feedback from different people, that helps a lot, especially for beginners like me!

Did you installed the small spring below the ball joint ? I am not sure if it must be there but maybe helps.

No I fitted them without the spring as this wasn't part of the kit.

Big milestone today, as the engine is finally out of the car, YAY!

Kz1vuLI.jpg

I hired the engine hoist and the guy helped me to take it out.  Very friendly lad!

sdUhZgs.jpg

I put the engine on the engine stand. At the end I went for the short end, instead of the alternator 'nuts'.  I might change that later on...

aKWSKWK.jpg

And this is my engine bay ready for a deep clean!

Thanks for watching.

Cheers.

Victor.
